Merriman suspended

Fitting that I'd post on Page "56" in a thread about Merriman. ;)

Okay, confession time. Who read every last page in here?

Not me. I could only make it to page 8.
I'm guilty tyke. Well, I still have some pages to go since I logged off last night.

Edit...

Okay, now I've read every post. Gee it was fun.

If this was covered earlier in the thread I apologize, didn't read it all, but does a suspension for steroids mean Merriman tested positively previously? Or is it an immediate suspension for the first offense? I know you get one freebee for drugs, wasn't sure if the rules were the same for performance enhancers. Anyone?

Steroids is automatic 4 games. I think this covered on page 32. Read away. :D

We still should have drafted Merriman over Ware.

Merriman for 12 games > Ware for 16 games....

:lmao2: :lmao: :shootfoot

I changed my settings to 40 posts per page. Only 22 pages for me.

Restarted from last night about page 12, stopped at 15, and then skipped to 20.

Very busy thread... It triple-doubled since last night.

Thirty pages added since I last checked, is it the busiest thread in the history of this board?

Still say this much reaction over a player on another team that the Cowboys don't even play is a bad sign.

There's a lot of venom between posters who want to rub taking Ware over Merriman in the faces of others. It seems like there is a new thread on the subject every few days. So that's why this thread has grown so large. Those who stuck behind Ware and his consistency over the hype that is "Lights Out" are getting some vindication.

No, Q's release thread exploded. It was adding 3 or 4 pages faster than you could read 1.

Yeah. Not having your starting OLB for 4 games is really good for the team.

Imagine the thread we'll get if Merriman still ends up with more sacks than Ware at the end of the season....

Followup question: if this is Merriman's first offense, how did he manage to avoid detection when he bulked up to start his pro career? I was highly suspicious of his phenomenal weight gain of 30 pounds over 3 months from when his college season ended to the combine.

It kind of speaks to how random the drug testing really is. Maybe he just didn't get his number called til now. I posted an article earlier, the testing is done through a computer, 6 to 8 players on each team are randomly selected each week to be tested.

So some players could be tested two or three times before another player is tested once?

It might get ugly.

Based on 6 guys being tested from each team, you'd have about a 4% chance that a player would avoid being tested over the course of 22 games. Not a huge # but on average about 2 guys per team.

About a 14% chance a guy would only receive 1 test in that period. 21ish% that you'd be tested twice over 22 games.

Those #s suggest to me that you'd have to be very unlucky to get popped on a one time deal but you'd be very likely to get caught if you used regularly

It definitely could go down like that. The article I posted was by Collinsworth, and he said:

"However, with steroids, performance might be enhanced. Thus, each week players are given random tests for steroids. A computer will randomly select six players, on each team, each week, to be tested. To show how random the test is, my HBO partner Dan Marino said he was tested eight times in one season."

And I don't think anyone ever suspected Marino of juicing. Someone else posted another bit - that after you've been caught, you are subject to almost weekly testing, I think, as David Boston has been. We all see how this has worked out for him.

As stated time and time again, Player personalities and ability to fit into our system was a huge factor when evaluating Merriman and Ware on Draft Day.

I could be mistaken but I would think if Merriman had already been popped before which he would have had to have already failed more than once to get the suspention then he is subject to more drug testing than just the standard random testing. I know Lett got to the point he was tested 10 times within a month.

Can you really do an accurate probability like that for something completely random? The Marino quote suggests it is truly random.

How'd you come up with 4%? I got 7%, or about 4 players per team.
