Can you really do an accurate probability like that for something completely random? The Marino quote suggests it is truly random.

Yes, actually you can if it is completely random. If it is non-random you can't get an accurate probability. Marino's outcome is not likely but it would likely but the league has over 1500 players -- so unlikely is relative. I can calculate the odds on that for you later today if you are interested.

No thanks. I have enough numbers to look at. :) I'll take your word for it.

you using a binomial expansion formula?
Don't think you have to for the first probability.

Simply take the probability that he won't get tested one week (47/53 = .887) and raise it to the 22nd power.

Based on 6 guys being tested from each team, you'd have about a 4% chance that a player would avoid being tested over the course of 22 games. Not a huge # but on average about 2 guys per team.

About a 14% chance a guy would only receive 1 test in that period. 21ish% that you'd be tested twice over 22 games.

Those #s suggest to me that you'd have to be very unlucky to get popped on a one time deal but you'd be very likely to get caught if you used regularly

And the chances go down some because I've read where steroid users take them in cycles, so it may not be necessary to be a potential positive test every week of the year and still get the benefits of the drugs. I don't know enough about steroids (how long they stay in the system, how long you maintain the benefits) to say how that works #'s wise on the odds of getting tested positive if you're a regular user, but it would seem if you time your program right it might lessen your odds of getting caught quite a bit, no?

Chargers D suddenly a big question mark

posted: Sunday, October 22, 2006 | Feedback | Print Entry
filed under: Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers' loss in Kansas City this week looks like it's going to be a lot more costly than one game in the loss column.

The Chargers lost OLB Shaun Phillips for the next four-to-six weeks with a calf injury. Phillips is the Chargers' season leader in sacks with six. He was filling in for Steve Foley, who will miss the rest of the season after an off-the-field incident in which he was shot.

Then, after the game, the shocker: As reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen, star OLB Shawne Merriman will be suspended the next four games due to a violation of the NFL's steroids and related substances policy.

Suddenly, the Chargers could be without their top three pass rushers for the next month. DE Igor Olshansky is going to miss the next month after knee surgery, too. All of a sudden, one of the deepest defenses in the NFL is thinning in a hurry.

The Chargers still have some solid depth at LB, but most of it is on the inside, where Stephen Cooper and Matt Wilhelm are their two top backups. The first train of thought is potentially to move Donnie Edwards and Randall Godfrey outside, but then you would be affecting four positions instead of two. Whatever the options are, they must figure them out quickly.

The Chargers, who have had a cream puff schedule up until this road trip to Kansas City, are getting ready for a tough stretch, too. Three of San Diego's next four games are against potential playoff teams (St. Louis, at Cincinnati, at Denver).

I think the biggest thing to point out with the loss of these players is it will now have an affect on the entire defense. Not only does it hurt the OLB position and the Chargers' ability to play the run, but it is going to have a profound effect on the secondary.

The secondary is the weak link of this Chargers team and that reared its ugly head Sunday when it could not get pressure on the QB. Kansas City's Damon Huard was sacked only two times, had a ton of time in the pocket, and picked this Chargers secondary apart.

Earlier Sunday we talked about the Chargers potentially having the best defense in the NFL. Twelve hours later, we're trying to figure out how this team is going to get lined up next weekend.

For now.... until Merriman explains why he took the steroids and then his lovers come back defending him no matter the explanation.

So ...Is that the official end to the Ware/Merriman debate? :D

Ware will clearly be the better football player for the next 4 weeks.

I personally wouldn't be suprised if Castillo was also using.. he had in the past and he and Merriman are pretty close.. it really wouldn't be shocking.

Also, I don't remember , but was Foley also caught on steriods?

And.. wait.. for more conspiracy...two other LB's are out with injuries... are they actually injured or are they trying to hide them from being tested? I'm pretty sure the Igor has had some freakish strength numbers in the past... Just makes you wonder..

On ESPN they're reporting rumors that he might be taking roids to help heal his ACL which has been bothering him as of late.

That will be the story... and he'll stick to it...

Most will excuse him at that point...

I guess Hasselback will test positive soon also, since his knee will be bothering him.

There is no excuse in my book, everyone has injuries, why should he get to take roids for his? That is a really weak excuse.
