To bad steroids have no effect on ligaments or tendons. They generally increase the chance of damage to them since they cannot keep up with the enhanced muscle growth. If he has an injuried acl, good chance it was caused by his steroid use.

Exactly. That's why Boston kept tearing up his ACL.

Typically, when players are injured cutting, or where no player really falls on the limb and causes it to be twisted in an awkward position (and you can say, "ouch" while looking at it), it's probably because they were supplementing excessively (either through steroid use or other supplements).

Roids? Who would have thought?

After seeing some of his celebrations after sacking someone I am convinced they have the wrong guy.

On ESPN they're reporting rumors that he might be taking roids to help heal his ACL which has been bothering him as of late.

:/

I could be wrong, but I thought they said he had an issue with his Achilles.

I think the taking steroids to heal excuse is going to be used a lot now. With Castillo doing it before the combine, the general attitude toward him when it came out was that he was less culpable because he was trying to heal.

Now Merriman gets a positive test, and it looks like that's going to be his "alibi." Seems too convenient, like he's trying to escape the criticism. I think it worked in Castillo's case because that was a new excuse. Now everyone who tests positive is going to say "Well I was trying to heal my hangnail quicker, so I took steroids to speed the process up."

I'm not buying.

No change there.....
I think you have dance envy of Merriman's "Juiced Jig". You have referenced it several times here and on another board we know of.

And the chances go down some because I've read where steroid users take them in cycles, so it may not be necessary to be a potential positive test every week of the year and still get the benefits of the drugs. I don't know enough about steroids (how long they stay in the system, how long you maintain the benefits) to say how that works #'s wise on the odds of getting tested positive if you're a regular user, but it would seem if you time your program right it might lessen your odds of getting caught quite a bit, no?

The #s we are talking about refer to the likelihood of being chosen for testing - getting caught is a whole different ballgame.

But you are right -- one of the primary arguments against this testing program is that it isn't going to catch guys enough.

Hey I got this post from another board. Thought it was interesting.

Funny thing is I said this two years ago around combine time, and again this last seasons combine with Davis, I said that Vernon Davis and Merriman were work out buddies at UNIV of MD, and that they were doing Freakish things at the combine, things like huge men running below 4.5's in the forty Having verticals that Basketball players would envy. I said on this forrum that a player like these two naturally comes around once in a 100 years, but two of them coming from the same school in back to back years was Crazzy....But nooooooooooo, people on this board were saying I was smearing their good names and I should shut my mouth if I don't have proof , when I all did was voice my opinion on Merriman and Vernon Davis because they were both Freaks of Nature at the combines. Look at their combine numbers people, un-heard of type numbers for their size, both of them got paid and that is all that matters to them when they were doing whatever type of juice they were doing. I am so glad we took Ware, cause at least we know Ware is legit.

Was Castillo the guy drafted a couple of years ago that was caught using Steroids but was still taken in the 1st round or was that someone else?

Has Merriman come out with his "good" reason for testing positive for steroids yet?

900 plus posts... I will never find it if it has

It's not official yet, but it's a couple of pages back...

They think he's going to say he was trying to recover from his injury (Achilles or ACL... not really sure what was injured)

Everyone apparently wishes Ware could do it. If only he were on the juice, he could wig out like an epileptic buffoon.

ESPN Eric Allen's Take

I'm shocked and saddened by the news of Shawne Merriman's reported suspension for a positive steroids test. I met this young man during Pro Bowl week and was struck by how he was a down-to-earth and thoughtful young man. He had a great work ethic and an excellent knowledge of the NFL's history and wanted to one day be a part of that illustrious history. Now I wonder how far he took that desire and if he realized the consequences of his actions, because now everything he's ever accomplished and will accomplish in football will be questioned.

The Rookie of the Year award and Pro Bowl honors we all thought Merriman earned last season have now been sullied completely by his imminent suspension. Going forward, whenever he plays in a game people are going to mention this positive test result. And the consequences aren't just off the field, they are also on the field; now players are going to take extra shots at him because he's going to be thought of as a cheater. Everyone in his locker room is going to look at him differently, and to some he'll be a pariah, never to be trusted again.

I don't understand how a professional athlete in this day and age could take steroids when there are so many consequences. Sure, I understand the great deal of money that is to be made if you're able to get away with it. But is it worth what he's now going to go through? This is a kid who presumably wanted to one day be mentioned in the same breath as luminaries like Mike Singletary, Dick Butkus, Ray Lewis and Lawrence Taylor. Now he stands a much better chance of being mentioned in the same breath as Brian Bosworth and Tony Mandarich.
