Merriman's career over?

Shawne Merriman revealed Saturday that his career could be over. In addition to a torn PCL, Merriman has a torn LCL in his left knee.

His knee requires extensive reconstructive surgery. Perhaps Merriman will chance it and play this year, but that would be foolish. His contract is up after the 2009 season and if he has the procedure, Merriman could try continuing his career afterwards. He'd risk more damage by playing on the knee in 2008.

I think if he doesn't have the surgey then the career could be in jeopardy.

He needs to call Terry Glenn and ask if he should get the surgery now or risk playing and getting it later.

What a shame. I've laughed at some of the steroid jokes, but I don't wish this type of thing on anybody. And as far as the Ware comparison, yes, we would be pretty devastated.

Shame. He had/has the potential to be an alltime great pass rusher.

I saw somewhere that this is the same injury Merriman played through last December, but I don't know if that's true.

If it is, he may have done permanent damage to the knee at that time.

I don't see a lot of the Chargers, but Merriman was fun to watch play and it's our loss if he doesn't make it back healthy.

You have to wonder. roids. then this. is there a connection? Also playing last year after the initial injury- was there a misdiagnosis? A lot of questions here.

Oh really? Because I was watching ESPNews earlier and they cut to this guy who looks and talks exactly like Shawne Merriman and he said something pretty much like "Yeah, the doctors have said it could potentially be career ending."

So I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he revealed.

Yes, there is a connection. A lot of guys get too strong for their ligaments that hold their bones together. While their muscles get bigger and faster by steroid usage, their ligaments do not grow whatsoever. Therefore, there is a larger strain on the ligaments than was naturally intended, thus making the likelihood of injury greater.

hes not an eagle, skin or giant so....Get well soon. lol

Really even tho I dont care for the guy but I dont feel good about his injury, loved watching him play hopefully he can work through this and get back on the field. Playing thru 2008 will be dumb he needs to get it fixed and come back!

He might loose some money but he may never play again if he tests it..

IF this was brought on by his steroid use, I have zero sympathy for him.

I'll wait to hear all the facts before judging, but it's a bit fishy that Merriman randomly tears 2 ligaments in his knee that football players VERY rarely tear. And I know that steroid use can weaken ligaments.

Seriously, how often do players tear their PCL and/or their LCL?

I think he's been on the decline since he got busted for roids so its better for him to get out now than later.

DWare was the better pick.

I agree with you 100%.

It may be a bit harsh, but thats what he deserves.
