Merriman's career over?

He's not quite to the career being over stage yet. Basically he has the option of having surgery (exactly what's involved in that is TBD), or playing through it. This is the same injury he had in December. If he plays through it, he won't be 100% and has the risk of making it worse and ending his career.

Oh really? Because I was watching ESPNews earlier and they cut to this guy who looks and talks exactly like Shawne Merriman and he said something pretty much like "Yeah, the doctors have said it could potentially be career ending."

So I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he revealed.

You people are so naive. This is posturing by a player who doesn't want to be viewed as a me-first guy. The Chargers believe that it's not even serious enough that he shouldn't be able to get out there on opening day. And guess what? It works well as an excuse because the surgeon, Dr. Andrews, can't reveal anything to the public because of HIPAA violations about patient privacy.

Merriman said it could be career ending, I guarantee the doctor never told him that. And I guarantee you won't hear the doctor saying that. I challenge anyone to find a quote from Dr. Andrews. You could see that he was lying about the way he paused when saying it. It is an *****' PCL tear, nothing more, nothing less. Give me a break. Merriman is all about himself and his precious body, this **** he's telling you about him really wanting to go ahead and play is total B.S. and some of you are buying into it hook, line and sinker.

He wants to get the surgery that will end his season, he doesn't want to look like a prima donna, which he is.

My niece tore the same ligaments playing volleyball, she's 5'6" 120 pounds. I don't believe she's on steroids.

I hope he makes nearly a full recovery. He does not seem to have the right personality to be a sports caster.

I tore those same ligaments playing hockey about 9 yrs ago or so.....several operations later....and its never the same.....i was in my mid 30's tho....

The PCL is hard ligament to tear....thats what Ive been told anyways.

Hopefully he will recover.....he does have the best doctors and trainers working with him and he is still young.

LCL injuries are pretty trivial.

PCL injuries can cause some major functional instability in a football player. Most sedentary people in day-to-day life can get by reasonably well without a PCL.

Everytime he tries to stop suddenly on that leg there will be some excessive motion of the femur (thigh bone) sliding forward over the tibia (shin bone). I'd find it hard to believe he could play his position well with this injury.

It is indeed a far less common injury than ACL or MCL. Most of the time I see it is from motorvehicle accidents. LCL is also fairly uncommon . I wonder what kind of play he got injured on.

I agree with you 100%.

It may be a bit harsh, but thats what he deserves.

Deserves? Why? B/c he used steroids? I bet that at some time in their careers many players have done the same. There are tons of substances that the league doesn't test for simply b/c their administrative structure makes it almost impossible to keep up with new substances in the policy. A good portion of the league would be thrown out of the Olympics for doping b/c that's a stronger testing policy.

I don't care if the guy did herione, I wish him well and hope for the best with regards to his knee. Hope I see him on the field again, and if not I hope he has full mobility as he ages.

Good Explaination. He will get the season ending surgery and that is pretty obvious, he will get better, because his body has been whithering since the HGH suspension and he will be back.

But the bigger question is, is how well will the Chargers do with Phillips and ?? rushing the passer? The Chargers are a team that relies on a pass rush and man to man on the outside. I believe that this really hurts their chances at a Super Bowl run.

I hate it when a good player's career is cut short due to injury, even Joe Theismann's. I do wish the best for Merriman. He is a beast.

On the other side, I am so glad Dallas passed up on him and took Ware.

Yes, there is a connection. A lot of guys get too strong for their ligaments that hold their bones together. While their muscles get bigger and faster by steroid usage, their ligaments do not grow whatsoever. Therefore, there is a larger strain on the ligaments than was naturally intended, thus making the likelihood of injury greater.
Think David Boston.

He deserves it because he manipulated people into thinking that he was a real star and got a big head and did his stupid dance and all that crap. He put the spotlight on himself and loved it when he shouldn't have been there.

 Get over yourself, seriously you feel manipulated? Yeah because Merriman is the only football player to have ever used a steroid. It's not like they were used heavily in the 70's - 80's or anything. That said how do you feel manipulated? Did you shell out any of your own cash to go to a Chargers game? Did you buy a Merriman jersey? Did you attend any Maryland games?

Shawne Merriman revealed Saturday that his career could be over. In addition to a torn PCL, Merriman has a torn LCL in his left knee.

His knee requires extensive reconstructive surgery. Perhaps Merriman will chance it and play this year, but that would be foolish. His contract is up after the 2009 season and if he has the procedure, Merriman could try continuing his career afterwards. He'd risk more damage by playing on the knee in 2008.

He just needs to get what needs repairing repaired. Reconstructive surgery for knees is pretty advanced. As long as he doesn't have a lot of cartilaginous damage or significant nerve damage then he will be ok in 18 months. Maybe 12 but likely 18 or more for two knees.

It's our loss that Merrimans career is over just a couple years into it? What a stupid thing to say. Sounds like its more Merrimans loss than the fans. He is the one out of Millions of dollars not us. Sheesh.

I saw somewhere that this is the same injury Merriman played through last December, but I don't know if that's true.

If it is, he may have done permanent damage to the knee at that time.

I don't see a lot of the Chargers, but Merriman was fun to watch play and it's our loss if he doesn't make it back healthy.
