Metallica vs Megadeth

If you're a fan of both bands, like me, then you probably know the common thread they share. If you don't, here's a quick summary.....

Dave Mustaine is the founder, main songwriter, guitarist, and lead vocalist for the American thrash metal band Megadeth. Mustaine was also the first lead guitarist and co-songwriter of Metallica until he was abruptly removed from the band in 1983. During his short time in Metallica, Dave Mustaine toured with the band, co-wrote four songs which appeared on Kill Em All, and co-wrote two songs which would eventually appear on Ride the Lightning. Mustaine has also made independently unverified claims to have written parts of "Leper Messiah" from Master of Puppets.[5] He also recorded several songs with the band including the No Life 'Til Leather demo tape. A few of the songs he wrote with Hetfield and Ulrich went on to be re-recorded by Metallica. The most well-known of these is "The Four Horsemen" from Kill 'Em All, which Mustaine wrote as "The Mechanix" and later released on his debut album with the original lyrics as "Mechanix".

Ok, so now that you're caught up, which band is superior, in your opinion? And why? Video evidence is encouraged.

I prefer Megadeth. The main reasons are the complexity of the music, though it remains very rythmic, and the political topics that Mustaine writes about. Plus the fact that they're just faster, harder and heavier than Metallica. Here's one of my favorite examples of why I prefer Megadeth:

If you like thrash, you can't go wrong with either.

Love the older stuff from both bands and think Megadeth were better in the guitar department.

One thing for Megadeth vs Metallica...megadeth did not completely change their style down the road as Metallica did.

But as I said, if you like thrash you gotta love both bands, esp the older stuff.

Mustaine desperately craved the popularity and worldwide acceptance that Metallica received with The Black Album. I see Risk as a sellout album, and Megadeth's worst effort.

What's amazing to me is how many members have been in Megadeth over the years, yet as you said, the style remains pretty much the same, sans Risk.

Metallica wins for me.

Megadeth to me are just a great thrash metal band. Plus while being a great songwriter and guitarist Daves voice is annoying to me.

With Metallica you get more diversity in their music.

I loved Megadeth and thought they were so much better than Metallica. I had the Metallica Demo that had Mustaine on it and it rocked. You could hear the difference between his sloppy guitar and Hammets boring guitar work.

That said, I thought Mustaine just changed for the worse really with the grinding odd ball singing he started doing later on after Rust in Peace. I just lost track of them after that.

And yeah Holy Wars was an awesome song. The whole album just had a lot great guitar songs to jam with.

My favorite Metallica song.

That was one of the harder bass lines I have learned. Loved the lactic acid buildup in my forearms afterwards. Great song. As a former bass player, I found Cliff's bass lines more exciting than Jason's.

Cliff Burton was a great one. Speaking of Cliff Burton.....Dave Mustaine penned this song a few hours after finding out that Cliff was killed in the bus accident. The lyrics deal more with what he was going through in a relationship at the time, but the music and mood were a result of the bad news he received about his friend and former bandmate....

In this case, The Four Horsemen. It's much cleaner.

I agree. I've always like The Four Horseman better....it's has a great groove to it. I do admire Mustaine for releasing Mechanix though, and for blistering through it at twice the speed of Metallica.

That is great, but if I had to choose I'd take Wake Up Dead.

I was saving those two for bigger Metallica targets, like Wherever I May Roam & Sanatarium

By the way, the riff in the middle of Wake Up Dead, just after the 1 minute mark, is one of my favorite riffs in any metal song.

Without a doubt, That's what I loved about Mustaine, he wrote very catchy riffs like that.

I always liked the fact that their drummers tend to stay away from the ker-plunk ker-plunk ker-plunk style and have more intersting rythyms and fills than most metal drummers. I hate to give Mustaine credit for everything, but when you consider that they've had more drummers than Spinal Tap and Mustaine is a control freak, I think it's reasonable to assume that he has some say in that.
