Metallica vs Megadeth

Musically speaking,Metallica's better days died along with Cliff Burton.
They became everything they despised, sobered up and became a bunch of art collecting wussies.

I always liked the fact that their drummers tend to stay away from the ker-plunk ker-plunk ker-plunk style and have more intersting rythyms and fills than most metal drummers. I hate to give Mustaine credit for everything, but when you consider that they've had more drummers than Spinal Tap and Mustaine is a control freak, I think it's reasonable to assume that he has some say in that.

Mustaine was the main writer I'd think so I'm sure he told everyone what to do. Gar Samuelson was a great drummer. He and Chris Poland were Jazz guys before hooking up with Mustaine and Megadeth. He probably raised the bar for anyone Mustaine would be looking for after experiencing that.

I liked And Justice For All, but they did change too much and I just didn't bother after that. I'm glad I got see them before Burton died, it was a real treat.

True, from a guitar standpoint is not even close, and Mr Hammett is way too wah pedal happy for my taste.

Hammet is bland. He's capable, but very boring as a lead guitarist. A little creep too. There used to be a record shop here in NJ, right in my town, that was run by Megaforce Records and all those acts filtered through, Megadeth, Raven, Slayer, Overkill and Metallica, etc. Hammet had nothing to say to the bunch of kids lining up to meet his band.

You know, for $9.99 you can now own that album with bass guitar included @ Metallica.com..hurry,this offer ends when the band records "The Unforgiven IV" from their upcoming album "Haircuts R Kewl"

They are both great, but Metallica was better plain and simple. Better lyrics and a better singer. James Hetfield as a vocalist is just straight up better than Dave. Now, once Metallica hit Load / Reload etc they started to go down hill. King Nothing (which came from Load) is probably one of my absolute favorite Metallica songs, but after that. Metallica sucks. St Angre is hideous.

Finally, Megadeth always puts out at least 1-5 good songs per CD, Metallica between Kill'em All and Black had loads of great songs on every CD.

Eh? Compared to who? Most Metal leads are interested in shreding only. At least he puts rhythms in his leads. A lot of his leads tell a story of sort. Well, at least before everything went to hell after and around the Load albums. I stopped listening after St Garbage came out.

I can see that, but the wah does add flavor. Kirk has already said the wah is his favorite effect.

It's funny. For a long time I would have agreed. While today I don't disagree, I've really grown fond of the slower heavier crunch sound that appeared after Cliff. (Justice, Black) Not only did Metallica switch, but Slayer's best stuff happened in that period too. Just before Dave Lombardo left. (South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss) Lets not forget Pantera blazed a bad *** trail playing the same type of music.

Cliff and Metallica freaking owned, but the change wasn't necessarily for the worst when he passed on. A new age of real metal was born and some of the best metal in history was written. Cliff would have undoubtedly approved.

Long live the "Thump and Crunch" metal.

Compared to my fave,Adrian Smith. Now that's one who gives you tasty solos.

That is great, but if I had to choose I'd take Wake Up Dead.

Wakeup Dead isn't one of the best Metal songs of all time, but is without a DOUBT is one of the most interesting and entertaining riff wise. I've actually posted this song and commented on it here on CZ before. I love this song.

Excellent choice vta!

I agree to the point that I love Adrian Smith, but it does definitely fit with your comment earlier that Metallica died when Cliff did.

I think the difference between Kirk and Smith is the fact that Kirk could slow it down a bit and implement the wah to add flavor. The wah is something I don't recall Smith doing very much if at all. Beyond that, they weren't that much different. Actually, creatively they were very similar.

Up the Irons and let the bell toll.

there's nothing wrong with me saying that i like both, is there?

Thump and Crunch is probably my absolute favorite.

The Shortest Straw, IS thump and crunch!

A song that dictates THUMP AND CRUNCH to the extreme.

Pantera raging the thump and crunch that looks a little deeper in you!

Slayer rings in....

twice...

I think maybe most thrash lead guitarists, but there were plenty of great metal guitarists doing some good work. I think I'd be in agreement with Metalhead on naming Maiden. I loved Dave Murray and Adrian Smith and they're who I was sort inspired by before before Metallica came around. Then there's Randy Rhodes, his successor Jake ? (forgot his last name) and I did love Yngwie.

Guitar rock like that seems to be a thing of the past.

Jake Lee is who you are thinking of. Loved his work on Badlands after he left ozzy...great 70's style guitar rock.

I've gone back and forth on who I like more depending on where in the cycle each band was currently in. They've both had their ups and downs, but St. Anger was the most soul crushing album I can ever remember buying. I listened to that crap over and over trying to get where they were coming from, but it just never clicked with me (or anyone else, apparently). Just horrible, and far, far worse than anything Mustaine and Co. have released.

I'm in a good place right now though with both Metallica's and Megadeth's latest being absolutely crushing. I don't care what anyone says about Metallica post-Justice, Death Magnetic just kills. And Megadeth's last, Endgame, is a shredder from start to finish and it shocked the hell out of me when I first heard it. I didn't know Mustaine still had that kind of energy left.

We're all lucky that these two bands are still going after it after all these years.

Now, if the third leg of The Big Three (sorry Anthrax, you're not included) would get off their rears and record something listenable, I'd be complete.

Oh...and Orion is my favorite Metallica song and probably my favorite metal song overall. Always gives me goosebumps when I turn it on.
