This report certainly bums me out.

I know some think Irvin is a con. I don't. I think he's sincere. He has certainly had his problems in the past. Some (all?) he has owned up to.

I have no idea if these recent allegations are true. I hope they're not.

If Irvin has stayed clean regarding drugs and women I suspect it has been a fierce battle. Those temptations often times don't just go away because you become aware of their destructiveness or a higher calling. They want you back. So I'm not going to be shocked one way or the other.

For selfish reasons I hope Mike is innocent and cleared so he can stay in the public eye because I do think he's trying to stay clean and his apparent frankness on the topic in the past has been inspirational.

In either case I hope Mike continues to pursue the righteous life that I think he is genuinely seeking. True or not, Mike isn't perfect and never will be. That is not to excuse whatever his transgressions have been or will be.

I'm with CoCo.

@Four: you're right -- let's assume Mike is as innocent as a newborn baby.

So this lady just picked him out of a crowded bar, filed a false police report and tried extorting him for no reason?

cause he is michael irvin, he has money, and has been in trouble before.

The NFL teaches a class to these guys when they come in the league about how their status and money makes them a target. Mike's past only makes his target bigger.

Easy money, That's why.

Agreed -- so where are all the false reports against Aikman, Emmitt, Darren, DWare, etc.? There's a first time for everything . . .

See that's my point.

Irvin is MARRIED. He promised the world in Canton that he would try to be a better husband & father. We all believed him. Now this. Even if the rape claim is false, Irvin put himself in this situation by [allegedly] having relations with a woman not his wife.

His guilt or innocence isn't the issue for me -- its his character & (lack of) judgement.

If Irvin is guilty he should definitely pay. If he is innocent he should stay out of the public eye forever. I am sick of him and his drug busts and other shenanigans-only liked him as a player. Met him several times and didn't like what I saw. He is our version of Lawrence Taylor. If the woman is lying then she should go to prison.

I haven't made my mind up -- I'm just wondering out loud why Irvin attracts all these false claims but other rich ex-players, many of them also in the public eye, don't . . .

I don't think it can be said any better than that.

Well ESPN thought their ratings were bad? Well they had the best person they possibly could have in that time slot.

Better offer Babe Laufenberg what ever amount of money he wants to do that show.

I can see suspending the show but ESPN just pretty much went against what they said they wouldn't do anymore.

FWIW: Irvin's tearful & heartfelt HOF speech came a month almost to the day that the alleged assault occurred.

I hate to throw the race card but why is Irvin getting vilified (already fired from the his ESPN radio show) while nothing happened to Big Ben?

What a joke

Because it's the believability factor. If he was in trouble once, he MUST be guilty of this now! People go after the easy marks and because of Irvin's past, he seems like an easy mark. More people would be apt to believe a lie about Irvin than say Aikman or anyone else who didn't have the history.

Now I agree with what you are saying about being in a position with a woman when you are married but there is no proof that he was even with her. Just her say so.

And while I don't think Irvin is guilty because I have seen no evidence, this is why married men should not go to bars without their wives. These kinds of things would be less likely to happen, IMO.

Dont want to change the subject, but what happened with Ben's case? Did the woman get proven to be a liar or was it settled by big $$$$$?

Irvin did it; Irvin didn't do it...either way, why is he caught again hanging around with another woman that is not his wife in a htoel? It's not like that part of the story has been contested by Irvin's lawyers (or if it has then there's some hack journalism going on if this is intentionally unreported to over-sensationalize the story).

he did it because he could

at least half the men in the world would get some on the side if they thought they could get away with it, it's in our DNA

Why? If he is innocent then what would be the problem?

I agree with everything you said.

Still, I don't recall Ben Roethlisberger having a checkered past that would've invited a claim of rape against him. So it seems to me, if you are someplace you shouldn't be (checkered history or not), it's a problem just waiting to happen.

As to the disparate media coverage: who knows why, but I don't chalk it up to racism.
