Irvin on Roy Wlliams: He hasn't been listening

It's no secret that Michael Irvin doesn't think much of Roy Williams as a lead receiver. Irvin's been using his ESPN Radio show and NFL Network gig as a bully pulpit. Who knows, if he survives Dancing With The Stars long enough, Irvin might even take a shot as Williams in prime time.

On his radio show this morning, Irvin decreed that no one wants the Cowboys to win more than he does. Toward that end, Irvin, who we all know was a Hall of Fame receiver, said he took Miiles Austin and Roy Williams aside in training camp and offered tips on how they might better help the Cowboys win.

In separate advice sessions with each, Irvin said he preached to the importance of anticipating the snap count to explode off the line of scrimmage and catching the ball against the body when going over the middle.

Irvin said the young Austin was receptive but the veteran Williams didn't really want to hear from him.

Irvin said he has seen evidence that in looking at side-by-side video of the two receivers, Austin was four yards ahead of Williams after 12 yards. It's not that Austin is that much faster, he just gets off the line quicker.

It would help if 9 would throw it in his general area code too.

juck, despite his obvious agenda, actually makes a relevant point. Aside from the many times when RW is obviously not running the route Tony expects, Tony seems to throw RW a ton of absolutely uncatchable balls. Including two last week that were high and in traffic.

This is undoubtedly true. They're clearly not on the same page with some of the option breaks. RW's saying all the right things, though, and so is Tony. The controversy over who's the #1 WR is a complete non-issue if the offense plays as well as it is right now.

Maybe catching it with his chest (which seems like terrible advice to me) will help Tony throw accurate balls his way or allow them to make the same read on an option route.
Irvin is the best receiver that has ever played in Dallas. If he says to catch it with your mouth, you should at least open wide.

The majority (i.e., greater than 50%) of incomplete passes to Roy in the past few games have been the result of either being off-target or miscommunication on an option route.

The point of my post was that Irvin's advice, if heeded by Roy, would have very little impact on his production this year. If you fix the off-target throws and the option route problems, the conversation isn't even happening.
Interesting that this off-target phenomenon only appears to happen with Roy Williams. Hmmmm......

Not true. Romo has thrown some high, uncatchable balls to Witten and Crayton too. I think Romo and Roy are both to blame on some level. I just hope they figure it out and soon. Sunday night would be a great place to start.

Very interesting stuff. This is probably a big reason Miles is getting more balls thrown to him. It doesn't take him as long to get to where he's supposed to be.

Now I know it isn't this bad every snap, but four yards ahead after twelve is a pretty big difference. Even if it is only that snap. Because that probably means Miles is getting off the line faster pretty much every single time.

Given that #9's throws are accurate to everyone else (career 63% completing rate, 60% this year), I'm guesing maybe that probably has something to do with Roy running sloppy routes and/or not getting off the line on precision plays.

Michael Irvin is my favorite Cowboy of all time.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Romo needs to make it a priority to get with Williams to get all the kinks out... Roy should listen to Michael Irvin, he's a legend.

Romo worked with Roy E all offfseason. Now it's regular season and it's time to prepare for the upcoming opponent. Romo's priority is to move th ball and score points for the Cowboys, not to make Roy Williams fantasy owners and fan boys happy (or to make Jerry feel better about his stupid trade). If he moves the ball better with other weapons, so be it. Despite what many Cowboy fans seem to think, the game of football does not revolve around which team has the greatest #1 WR.

I agree. I expect Romo to make his reads and find the open man. Anything they need to work on or work through needs to be done during or after practice but come game time I expect Romo to go out and do his job same with RW

I wonder if instead of being on the same page, Roy just reads a hell of a lot slower than Romo.

Someone get this man hooked on phonics.

Screw what stats say. Romo is having a great year. This is not a slight on him at all but Romo has thrown some crap to Witten and Crayton as well. Witten stats are down and some want to credit to him being a blocker but I disagree. Romo's passes to Witten have been behind him as well.

This video shows more of those against the body catches.

It takes a team effort for Roy and Romo to be so out of synch. We can argue about who should get more or less blame, but there is plenty of blame to around on this one (Roy, Romo, and their coaches).

That brought back some great great great memories. Irvin obviously preferred to keep his elbows tight against his body but I also saw him making outstretched catches too. But it also makes me wonder why a Texas boy, a WR no less, would not take the advice of a Cowboy legend like Michael Irvin very seriously.

I see Roy emulating the Playmaker's first down skit easily enough so why not some tips on how to protect yourself and the ball when going over the middle (or to improve his snap anticipation so he can get to his spot faster).

Despite whatever emotions are flying about in this thread, I will be the first to say that I would not mind seeing Michael Irvin as a coach for the Cowboys in some capacity.

Garrett HC, Sherman OC, Irvin WR Coach?

Most athletes who play with the passion that Irvin played with can't coach the new generation of athletes. Irvin would get frustrated...not worth his time. I saw this happen when Magic tried coaching the Lakers back in the 90s. Singletary experienced a bit last year.

On his radio show right now.

Tried to give Roy Williams advice during Training Camp.

One example in particular, Michael Irvin was giving Roy Williams some advice about going on over the middle. Michael Irvin told Roy to keep his hands down when trying to catch the ball over the middle. He said, you want to catch the ball on your body and limit amount of exposure your ribs have. He said, when they hit you while your hands are up, the ball is going to come out are go up in the air. He said when you catch the ball on your body, when they hit you it will stick to you.

Michael Irvin said that Roy was like, "Yeah I hear ya, but I don't like to do that".

Michael Irvin says that Roy Williams just doesn't listen and maybe this adversity is the best thing to happen too him.

Michael Irvin says this adversity would make Roy Williams listen.

Michael Irvin says he is making a lot money but not putting it together on the football field.

Michael Irvin says he was trying to talk to Roy and give him advice, but felt Roy didn't want it.

Michael Irvin said I tried to tell Roy that I had a job to due and had to analyze the Cowboys and the players. Michael told him, personally, I want the Cowboys to win more than anyone.

Michael Irvin says that in Detroit, you can hide but in Dallas you cannot hide. It will be national news and the media will come down on you when you make that kind of money and not producing.

Welcome to Dallas Roy :laugh2: .

Now if Michael can coach Roy to get his body 10 feet off the ground we're in business.
