Agree to disagree, I like Kincaid a tad better, but would be happy with Mayer as well
Mayer is very traditional so a lot of people will gravitate toward that because that’s what they have been used to.

I’d rather take a risk with Darnell Washington who may very well be a jag but at least you see the upside for a Gronkowski type of career.

He is just a blocking TE at this time, now that is a huge risk. To me he is Mercedes Lewis

Mayer‘s biggest strength is between the ears. He has a next level understanding of creating space & angles. He will be NFL ready day 1 (few TE’s are) and likely understands the nuances better than many pro’s. Wait until he develops chemistry with his QB and see what happens. The reason it looks old school is because when speed and twitch are in vogue, he is a hard nosed, cerebral, chain mover who you can depend on in any situation.

Not saying I would take him over Mayer at all.

I just would like a player that’s more explosive with my first round pick and Mayer is the type of TE that everyone would love in 1995 but not so much in 2023.

I don’t see him as a vertical threat.

I feel like anything he can do Ferguson can as well.
Ferguson isn’t on the same level as Mayer. I mean Ferguson was a mid round pick for a reason compared to Mayer likely going in the first.

Yeah, I think context matters. The reason why folks slept on Ferguson in Wisconsin was because his QB was awful (worse than ND). Ferguson is a very good receiver and he'll show that this year barring injury paired with Dak.

I posted these stats last year but here again are the QBs Ferguson played with his last season in Wisconsin and the numbers they put up:

But scouts often look beyond that stuff if they think the kid is a prospect. Fact is Ferguson just wasn’t considered the level of prospect Mayer is and he showed me nothing last year that would make me think he’s better than just a decent TE.

That being said, I am just not sure I see the value in a TE in the first that isn’t a game changer like a Pitts could be. Mayer isn’t that. Neither is Kincaid IMO.

You're stating the obvious ("Ferguson just wasn't considered the level of prospect Mayer is..."). What I'm saying is Mayer is likely only marginally better than Ferguson and I think that'll play out with Ferguson being paired with a good NFL QB and presumably taking over as the team's #1 TE. It's possible Fergy falls flat, but I don't think Mayer will be lighting the league on fire.

Exactly.

Mayer just doesn’t look significantly better than Ferguson.

In fact I think Ferguson looks better blocking.

I mean look at this guy. I’m sorry but Mayer is not significantly better than that.

That last comment is a howler.

I get you don't want Mayer but claiming Ferguson looks better as a blocker is a head scratcher. If the Cowboys took Mayer, barring injury, there's little doubt he'd be starting come Sept IMO. Again, that doesn't mean we should take him if he's there. But I think some see Mayer and don't see the sizzle that some other TE prospects have and didn't run the 40 blazing quick or anything like that and they are trying to justify why we don't need a guy like that because we have someone almost as good.

We don't. I suspect if given a choice, there isn't a GM in football that would take Ferguson over Mayer. But in this draft, I think there will be equal rated players at high positions of value at 26 than a TE. So I can't justify taking Mayer there even if I think he's likely to be a better TE than Ferguson.
