Mickey is usually a Tool IMO...but listenin to "Talkin Cowboys" today I was cheerin him on big time.....he was very adamant about NOT giving Romo up for nothing.....normally Id be against forcing someone to stay on our team if they didnt wanna be here, but in this case to hell with it, we either get somethin in return or at least keep him into TC just in case.....

No different than GM posturing. Like when you hear a GM in any sport say one thing and do the exact opposite. This is just another attempt by the Cowboys to put out the vibe that keeping Romo is a legitimate option for them.

That is all nice and dandy.

Look, I feel bad for people who argue for the "right thing" (trading Romo for value) but fail to understand why Jerry Jones' mishandling as a reason why we cannot have nice things.

Dak reminds me, body-wise, of McNair and McNabb. Both missed games in several seasons.
Dak is sturdy but he's not immune to injury.

Tony would feel pretty dumb if he went somewhere else, took a beating, then watched Dak get hurt with Dallas needing him to take over behind that line and with Zeke.
Morbid, I know.

Just saying, rehrets could flow both ways.

We're not keeping him, but--and I know I'm in the huge minority here--I don't think the idea of letting him compete for his job in camp is farfetched. Yes, Dak's the QB of the future, but after the way Tony handled 2016, I can't see how he can really complain about a challenge in camp. Not after the bullet Tony took last year.

And I think the players would play for either guy, too. It's one think to sit Dak in the middle of an 11-0 run. It's another to pick the best QB coming out of camp and ride with him into the regular season.

I know the team won't do it. I know the risks in letting it happen. No matter what, if they were to do it, they'd have to then trade or release Tony the next year and give the team over to Dak from there. But in terms of what's best of the Cowboys, what's best for Tony, and what would be pretty fun to watch for camp and whoever wins the starting job in the regular season, I wouldn't mind it. There's no shame in Dak sitting for a more experience vet to get his last shot at a ring. And Tony already endured the shame of being benched for a rookie signal caller.

What I don't think is realistic is keeping Tony and not letting him compete. That's just not the way the guy is wired.

All that said, I know it's not 'done'. And I know it's not going to happen. I wouldn't mind seeing it play out, though.

What bullet?

This is football. He fell on his butt, another guy fell on him, he got injured.

Nah. He definitely took the bullet by publicly accepting the demotion for the betterment of the team. But that's not really the point. Tony isn't owed anything. It's just that there's a legit question which player is the better QB right now, and, if he's on the roster, he deserves to compete for the starting job. Whether that's ever done or not in this situation is another matter.

This is also the same Mickey Spagnola that said "Drew Bledsoe gives the Cowboys a better chance to win Football games over Tony Romo" back in 2006. And he even said that If you start Romo over Bledsoe you're telling the rest of the team you're giving up on the season because Romo is not ready to win yet.

Mickey was brutal towards any fan that called in Talking about they wanted Romo to start over Bledsoe. I wish I could find that old audio.

Mickey never acknowledges that you pay him $14m as a backup if you keep him.

He also doesn't mention what you save in 2018 and 2019 if you cut him as opposed to what you have to pay then to keep him. Sure you don't get the significant savings until 2018 but if you keep him you don't get them until 2019 and have to pay him $14m to hold a clipboard.

It's the shortsighted view that ignores the other years you have a pro bowl caliber QB on the roster being paid $500k a year.

If he doesn't understand or if he has some other motive I don't know but that is the 500 lbs gorilla that he is being obtuse to.

You remember that?

I usually hit the handle to flush with Spagnola.

This man is doing God's work.

I think it's just homerism at its finest...

Romo as the backup creates problems. Remember that old saying "if you have more than one QB, you don't have a QB". Every interception, every bad pass, every bad quarter, every bad game will cause roars by some calling for Dak to be benched for Tony.

I think the organization made their bed when they didn't put Romo back in when he was healthy from his injury. Had they done that, they could've let Dak sit until Romo retired or until Dak could beat him in camp.

Plus it creates a competition question in the locker room. Why doesn't Romo get the opportunity to compete for his job too?

At this point, I just want something to happen. Traded, released, FO announces he's staying on board, what have you.

The wait and anticipation is the worst part of this.
Tony gets released. The rest is just a little game by Jerry and Tony's agent.
