I think it's just homerism at its finest...

Romo as the backup creates problems. Remember that old saying "if you have more than one QB, you don't have a QB". Every interception, every bad pass, every bad quarter, every bad game will cause roars by some calling for Dak to be benched for Tony.

I think the organization made their bed when they didn't put Romo back in when he was healthy from his injury. Had they done that, they could've let Dak sit until Romo retired or until Dak could beat him in camp.

Plus it creates a competition question in the locker room. Why doesn't Romo get the opportunity to compete for his job too?
Thats it. Jones is making a mess out of it. He is the worst kind of snakeoil salesman. Tony can't stay and can not be easily traded.

Theres no way Romo will be the backup this year

a- unless we make him the starter Romo will demand a trade/release. He's getting to old and he's to proud to sit for the year and 3 years of sitting will affect him. He has enough money- he wants to play.
b- to many teams have an interest now. If we dont release him someone will come up with an offer. only question is whats the offer ( I'm hoping for conditional 4th to 2nd). You know any offer lower than that (5th or 6th) will be taken immediately.
c- Our cap cant carry him.

Spags said he was dreaming and thats what the story is. Romo is gone. Only question is what we get in return

Mickey never acknowledges that you pay him $14m as a backup if you keep him.

He also doesn't mention what you save in 2018 and 2019 if you cut him as opposed to what you have to pay then to keep him. Sure you don't get the significant savings until 2018 but if you keep him you don't get them until 2019 and have to pay him $14m to hold a clipboard.

It's the shortsighted view that ignores the other years you have a pro bowl caliber QB on the roster being paid $500k a year.

If he doesn't understand or if he has some other motive I don't know but that is the 500 lbs gorilla that he is being obtuse to.
We could always keep him for 1 more year and still get big savings in 2018 and 2019

We could re-do his contract to guarantee 14m over 2 years with 300k games started incentives

There are options including keeping him and restructuring the 14m and delaying the cap hit until 2018

What is a kings ransom?

Brett Favre at Romo's age coming off an MVP caliber season fetched a 3rd...I would be ecstatic if we get a 3rd.

A 37 year old QB with a two year shelf life at best that hasn't played in two years isn't worth much in today's NFL. Not to even mention his bloated contract and the fact that he hasn't had a full 16 games since 2012.

I really wish he was worth more, I am just preparing myself for the meltdown when he is released because some people have completely unrealistic expectations. There will likely only be 2-3 decent fits, that hurts his value even more.
The fact is he should be kept because he is their best chance to win a Super Bowl now. Period.

I guess other people are also thinking that the Eagles traded an often injured, not as good or has the experience of Romo to the Vikings for a 1st rounder. Granted it was after the draft, in the preseason when an injury happened to another qb but I think people are saying if they can do it with Bradford than we should be able to do it because Romo is way better than Bradford (which he is).

It's the difference between saving $54m and $40m no matter how you move the money around.

Bradford is also a lot younger, that matters. You get 5 years out of a first round pick, you can get 5 years out of Bradford. Not a chance with Romo.

Regardless, a bad trade doesn't make the market. You didn't see teams rushing out to throw multiple premium picks on a receiver just because the Cowboys did it without Joey Galloway and Roy Williams.

I know people hate using their imaginations but bear with me...this is more of a question than suggestion

We restructure Romo's 14m contract down and gain 9m in space immediately...new cap hit 15.2m

Then we proceed as if we are keeping him... we only trade him as the season approaches if we get bowled over....the new team would only owe him 1m so he would be super attractive

We would be on the hook for a 15.2m cap hit this year and a 17.9m next year if traded but we should get multiple picks at that cost

How much is 13m in cash and cap space worth in draft picks?
