Mick's mail: Hamlin contract talk heats up.

I think that if you are going to pay Hamlin that much money then you really have to make a decision on Henry or Roy Williams next year. I think committing to him means letting go of one of the other 2. Hopefully with Jones, Scandrick and Jenkins we can do without Henry playing CB.

But if Henry stays and goes to FS that means Hamlin has to change to SS which I don't think he is a s suited for. Henry, healthy, could do just as well at FS as Hamlin could and for less money.

I really think Jerry should just stick with the Franchise tender and be ready to go with Watkins or Henry at the FS position next year. That would be my choice as to how to handle the situation

This makes practical sense and cap sense.

Your posts make it obvious that you aren't...

Oh Noes!!!!!

Coming from anyone else, I might find that to be insulting.

I tend to side with the people down on the long-term (> 4 years) contract length. Jones will do what he wants in any case, and in matters on money, he's on pretty firm ground.

Back to Canty/Hamlin, I have a bad feeling that in Jerry's mind, Tank is going to make Canty expendable. I don't like that idea at all.

Tank starts at NT, Ratliff starts at end.

You didn't mention Ratliff there. Personally, the only way I see that happening is if money becomes the issue. The question will be the value ratio of Tank and his contract next season and Canty and his contract next season. (they are both free agents after next season) They will still need to keep Spears unless Hatcher steps up into the a starting role.

Antiquated notion? :laugh2:

It's the way it is in the NFL right now. Today. Not 5 years ago. Even star safeties like Sanders and Reed aren't being paid what CBs or WR or OL are getting, much less what a QB is getting. Safeties don't generally make as much $ as almost every other position.

but the important of safeties increased in the NFL

w/ all these athletic TEs and 4 and 5 WR sets, you need safeties who can cover extremely well, as well as stop the run, so you're not getting ran over too

and thats not anything new...its been going on for years...you had teams running spread offenses with 3,4 or even some 5 WR sets in the late 80's and early 90's, and there have always been teams with athletic, great receiving TE's...none of that is new

I'm Glad to hear that the Contract talks with Hamlin are picking up, I see Jerry give him around a 4 year deal.
