Communication Skills

Written by Mike Jenkins, Wednesday November 11 2009

I know I haven’t been here on the site in a while, sorry. I’m just trying to stay focused on the season, trying to be team-oriented. We’re trying to get our chemistry right. We go out as a team together every Thursday night and the guys have been spending a lot of time together, that’s why I’ve been so busy.

We have had way better communication lately, especially between the offense and the defense, and I think that is translating onto the field. It’s really helping us on both sides of the ball.

I’ve been picking Romo’s brain a lot, every week. All he does is study quarterbacks to try to pick up ways where he can get better. I feel like as far as he’s studying quarterbacks, that can be an asset to me. I ask him what he knows about the quarterback we’re about to face, Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, and he breaks them down for me. He knows their weaknesses and strengths, when they’ll check down. It’s been a big help.

Other players also have been communicating better. Jason Witten will ask DeMarcus Ware about certain guys on defense, will this guy chip me coming off the edge, that kind of thing.

You need all the help you can get in this league. Especially someone like me, who had done nothing coming out of college except man-to-man defense. I didn’t think anything of it, just put me in front of my guy and let me cover him. But there’s so much to learn that can make you a better player, like knowing how being on the short side of the field can change the kind of routes the receivers run.

As a defense we’ve gotten a lot better since the season started. We lost the first couple games by a few points and we felt like it was on us because it came down to stopping the two-minute offense. The last couple games we won, and I feel like the defense played a role in shutting the other team down in the last two minutes. So we’ve shown a lot of improvement.

We had a big win against the Eagles and we’re really gaining confidence. It’s tough to go to Philly and come out with a win because the crowd is real tough. Win or lose, their fans are going to be on you.

We’re at Green Bay this weekend and it will be another tough crowd. It’s like a college atmosphere there, the whole city shuts down for the game.

I know where I’ll be Wednesday morning. My first stop, even before team meetings, will be at the QB room. Meetings don’t start until 8:30 but Romo gets in around 6 a.m. and I’ll be there at 7 to talk to him about Aaron Rodgers.

Great post.

The communication between offensive players and defensive players to find extra help just made my pants a little tighter.

Man I love this guy. You can tell he wants to be the best CB in the league.

He can't be talking about our Romo. All he does is play golf every day but Sunday. ;)

This is a great article, and I'm sure a lot of other teams do similar things. But we haven't heard of the Cowboys doing this till now. This is great!

He is getting better every single week. No doubt it is because of all the extra work he is putting in. Very impressed.

Great news! Now Mike needs to get to studying on his own and figure out what good cornerbacks do in the game and inform Tony!

Maybe Jenkins is Romo's caddy...

Jenkins will be a team leader one day.

You talking about Mike or Tony? Hell, it applies to both.

I just hope Jenkins doesn't start wearing his hat backwards like Romo. We're staring down the slippery slope of steep hill, my friends.

Odd that should come up. The last couple of interviews I've seen of Tony. His ballcap is on the right way. Maybe it's a sign...

Great to read. This guy is really stepping up and seems to be getting it.

The part I don't get is this whole Romo studying all the time thing. I thought he was a "golfing celebrity QB" who didn't have time for such things. ;)

Message to JJT and others "Perception is NOT reality."
Maybe it is to the lemmings, but insightful people know the difference.

He started it against KC, which is the same time I started working on my voodoo doll to offset Jessica's voodoo contract against Romo.

One of the two is a key to our success. :D

I love how this group has come together as a team. As commentators have said in the past Dallas had talent but did not play like a team this year seems to be much different in terms of team

wait,

romo not only studies other defences but also other QBs and knows their strengths and weaknesses
he is helping out our defense
he gets in to work at 6 am

that over-rated pos

get him out of here
