Stories like that have to make you smile if you are Cowboys fan. They are part of the reason I usually laugh when people criticize Romo for playing golf in the off season. He is a hard worker who puts in more then his fair share of time at trying to get better.

It says a lot about the type of team chemistry that is developing.

He's a very good writer, especially for a football player. That's Big East education for you :)

He can't be talking about our Romo. All he does is play golf every day but Sunday. ;)

Yeah, my 1st thoughts. All reports are that beginning in preseason, Romo has been going above and beyond in the film room. Heaven forbid if he takes a pee break or something, it might fall below the expectation of those that have been throwing rocks but probably do not work half as hard at their craft.

That's nice that he's seeking out Romo's thoughts, but maybe he should be watching film too, instead of letting Romo do the leg work.

Baby steps, I know.

A year ago he was dodging Giants running backs in the secondary. He's come a long way.

Valid point Chief.

I think it comes down to the fact that Romo is watching other QB's differently. His perspective is much different, and probably more insightful than having say Newman tell him about the QB they're coming up against.

I'm also sure Jenkins is getting his share of film time in too. ;)

Agreed, you can learn a lot from watching film, but learning about a quarterback from a quarterbacks' perspective is probably very good as far as understanding WHY a quarterback makes the decisions he does.

Great blog to read.

Now, Jenkins, get off of the damn computer and get to watching film, put your head back in the playbook and get ready for Green Bay. heheheehe

This is great to see. Thank goodness the likes of Pac-man are gone so Jenkins can have positive influences in game prepartion and work ethic. I am not sure where this is going, but the team is maturing before our eyes. Looking forward to see how each week and especially December turn out...

Yep, you're right. If you check the logs, you'll see that Jenkins has never attended a cornerbacks meeting, ever. He doesn't really even know where the film room is. He just asks Romo on an early morning for some quick insight and along he goes. The coaches have no problem with it. It's a win-win for everyone involved!

If he's doing all the things mentioned in the OP, is it not likely that those things are in addition to watching film? It seems the stuff mentioned would be of use to help him watch film better. Of course, I have no way of knowing if he actually is watching film, but I digress. :)

There were so many positive notes in his post. Team night out. Communication. Overall focus. Awesome stuff.

Communication Skills

Written by Mike Jenkins, Wednesday November 11 2009

I know I haven’t been here on the site in a while, sorry. I’m just trying to stay focused on the season, trying to be team-oriented. We’re trying to get our chemistry right. We go out as a team together every Thursday night and the guys have been spending a lot of time together, that’s why I’ve been so busy.

We have had way better communication lately, especially between the offense and the defense, and I think that is translating onto the field. It’s really helping us on both sides of the ball.

I’ve been picking Romo’s brain a lot, every week. All he does is study quarterbacks to try to pick up ways where he can get better. I feel like as far as he’s studying quarterbacks, that can be an asset to me. I ask him what he knows about the quarterback we’re about to face, Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, and he breaks them down for me. He knows their weaknesses and strengths, when they’ll check down. It’s been a big help.

Other players also have been communicating better. Jason Witten will ask DeMarcus Ware about certain guys on defense, will this guy chip me coming off the edge, that kind of thing.

You need all the help you can get in this league. Especially someone like me, who had done nothing coming out of college except man-to-man defense. I didn’t think anything of it, just put me in front of my guy and let me cover him. But there’s so much to learn that can make you a better player, like knowing how being on the short side of the field can change the kind of routes the receivers run.

As a defense we’ve gotten a lot better since the season started. We lost the first couple games by a few points and we felt like it was on us because it came down to stopping the two-minute offense. The last couple games we won, and I feel like the defense played a role in shutting the other team down in the last two minutes. So we’ve shown a lot of improvement.

We had a big win against the Eagles and we’re really gaining confidence. It’s tough to go to Philly and come out with a win because the crowd is real tough. Win or lose, their fans are going to be on you.

We’re at Green Bay this weekend and it will be another tough crowd. It’s like a college atmosphere there, the whole city shuts down for the game.

I know where I’ll be Wednesday morning. My first stop, even before team meetings, will be at the QB room. Meetings don’t start until 8:30 but Romo gets in around 6 a.m. and I’ll be there at 7 to talk to him about Aaron Rodgers.

Wow, I LOVE seeing this attitude and information being shared. Thanks for posting this!

Thought the same thing about Romo. If you believe the papers and the blogs, Romo is a goof-off who doesn't study enough and parties too much. Now we hear he gets to work at 6 in the monring.

As for how Romo wears his cap, what's the big deal. Never could understand why folks in Texas gave too hoots about whether he wears it backwards or forwards. Does wearing it backward have some kind of strange connotation in Texas? Heck I'm in my late 70s & my friends & I used to wear our caps backwards when we were younger. Can't figure out what the big fuss is. Somebody said people didn't like cause gangster type kids do it. That's bull. One generation does it, the next skips it, and then the 3rd generation does it again. Some people need a life.
