Mike Lombardi's Dallas Free Agent Target

people have been conditioned by past salary cap problems...
And some of the same people have been conditioned to believe that the cap is a fallacy and you can do whatever you want.

Meanwhile, those who actually are involved, like Stephen Jones, maintain that they have constraints on the cap and warn everyone, pretty clearly every year to not expect much.

They are operating on a budget, it is just that simple. They are not inclined to suddenly whip out the credit card.

I concede that point, but, like Perry, his first several years in the league were disappointing. And he turned it around at or near his contract season.

And maybe there's a good amount of my skepticism that's simply a gut feeling and not trusting any of these guys not to coast once they get that big payday.
Honestly there are few players in this league i trust not to do that. Business decisions all around in recent years

Ingram would be great if we were still running a 3-4, and probably still OK if we had cap to spend despite that he doesn't really fit what we are doing here.
A 247lb OLB does not make a pass rushing DE in this Marinelli scheme, unless we discover that Jaylon is a complete bust and can not play, but that still is not a pass rushing DE.
There is no defensive end in FA that is going to solve this issue,, time to accept that and move forward.

I wanted Ingram to replace Anthony Spencer back in 2012.

I don't think he's really a great fit here, either.

Here's the problem. Browns 101 million under the cap. Niners 76 mil. Jax 68 mil. All that cap space inflates contracts.
Not to mention Washington and New England with in excess of 60M.

I'd rather make a hard play for Carradine as he seems like the only reasonable FA target with upside for a position of need. Maybe a contract like we gave Thornton would do?

Same here. And that's why, for me, the talk of a possible reunion with Demarcus Ware looks more appealing all the time. He doesn't strike me as a guy who would coast, and at this stage, he'd be much more affordable as a specialist and himself contract would be much shorter if things didn't work out.

I am not a fan of reunion tours. Even if they did that, it should be a supplement to other talent, not viewed as a band aid to buy a year.

If the approach the giants took to free agency in addressing their needs on defense was so "worth it" then why did they not win anymore playoff games than the Cowboys that barely even looked at the free agency market. When you invest the monetary resources they did, it better net immediate results... it didn't. I like the approach Stephen Jones is promoting.

Not expecting it.

We'll sign another unknown that scored high on the SPARQ, that we were high on in the 20XX draft and hope that him, draftee, Tapper or Mayowa can give us pressure from the RDE.
This is the most likely outcome.we will drAft a RDE for the future.

no, the cap is not a fallacy, but the new environment allows alternative approaches.

i have no idea what the jones would do, but they do know what they need.
it is prudent to manage expectations of the fans.
for all we know, ingram jpp and the top FAs are franchised.

so i would be doing the same thing in their shoes in managing expectations.
they are perfectly capable to gaming the cap if they so choose.

I thought there was a cap "floor" that was going to prevent this from happening?

that is because the O is much worse.

right, we have to operate under inflationary conditions.
supply and demand dictate the market.
fortunately many FAs do not want to go to Clevelands of the world.
would not be surprised if Skins make a big splash in FAs - they are not far from being a contender.
Never know what New England will do.
There could be a nefarious plan why they opened up the 60M cap space.

I agree, although I think Ware could be a good supplement along with another young pass rusher.

Ingram is slightly different than Perry.

In 2015, Ingram had 10.5 traps and 8.5 last year. He also had seven forced fumbles in the past two years.

Perry had injury concerns like Ingram, but never hit above four sacks until this past year. He seems much more like the showing out to get paid type.

What the hell is a trap?

What the Cowboys will do be what they should do are different things. They should address the position that they've shown the complete and utter inability to draft in FA. "Overpaying" is the result of being unable to fill that position any other way. The other option is to build slowly through the draft which at best is going to take a couple of years to show results and waste Daks cheap years, Zekes freshest years, age the OL and have Dez on the backend of his career.

The NYG went from 30th to 2nd on points D and 32nd to 10th on yards.....that is immediate improvement

Dak was a free surprise last year....that means we get to spend on one top FA.....that should be SDE

everything else can go along planned routes

Dak = Romo = Ingram
