Mike McCarthy We will be good running the football and that's because we're going to commit to it

I remember an Aikman interview where he mentioned the difference between McCarthy and other Head Coaches he talked with was he focused on rushing attempts, not YPC. So you may not be far off.
Parcells used to talk about the same thing. He was far less concerned with YPC than making sure the attempts were there... Parcells called it "being stubborn with the run" because he understood that beating on the defense for 30-35 runs a game exacts a toll on the front seven even if you're only banging out 2-3 yard a pop. He also understood that continuing to run kept the defense from pinning its ears back and sending the kitchen sink at your QB. In other words it forces the defense to stay honest. And if they have to stay honest we have play makers on the outside who can win one on one. CeeDee, Ferg and Cooks can all make the defense pay... Maybe Tolbert and Turpin can do so as well in certain situations.

Well then, let's run for 500 yards Sunday because all it takes is enough commitment!

Seriously, if all it takes is commitment then every team would be good running the football. If takes an offensive line, with TEs and WRs that can block. Then it takes RB who can see the holes and get there before the defenders. It is not commitment. I takes talent.

And we have the talent. Or that is what we have been told the past 20 years.

based on pre season i am optimistic about our run game,we dont have a weak link at Center anymore.

Great post!

Are we still going to be committed to it if it clearly isn't working? I don't buy into the strategy of running the ball just to do it for 30-35 attempts just to try and wear the defense down. This isn't the 80s/90s anymore. I am not saying we need to attempt 50-60 passes a game consistently but if the run is clearly not working and we get drives cut short because of it and continue to get behind the sticks, it's time to re-think the approach. Committing to something doesn't equate success.

That sounds great but it's not about just committing to the run. You have to know how to switch gears with the flow of the game. Not every game is going to be an offensive shootout. Some defenses are very good and you need to play field position football. Our kicker is kicking 60+ yd fgs. We've got who's probably the most dynamic returner in the League. With 2-3 first downs per drive we should be in scoring position. If the defense doesn't collapse that will win those defensive games. We can't wait to adjust to what's happening a week later.

Are they planning to hand it off to Cee Dee Lamb because they just paid him a lot of money and stated he needs 15 touches?
Yep...the Browns had better be on high alert for our deadly jet sweep...
