We should have a poll. Are fans more disappointed we resigned McCarthy or Prescott? Lol
At this point, regardless of how the Cowboys finish, it looks increasingly likely that Mike McCarthy will be offered a contract extension here. Whether he accepts is another story. We should have a poll. Are fans more disappointed we resigned McCarthy or Prescott? Lol
This is a good post, especially the part about "no self respecting coach wanting to come here". All true. For most of this season I thought like many Cowboys fans that Mike McCarthy‘s tenure in Dallas was over either during the season or more likely, at season’s end. Now after what has transpired on the field plus the exit of Bill Belechick from the NFL stage, I’m thinking it is more likely Jerry tries to keep Big Mac in Big D.
Why is Jerry likely choosing to try and extend McCarthy? Because he probably knows the number of talented NFL coaches wanting to come to Dallas as the next sacrificial lamb on the Jones failure altar is dwindling like a flower in the Texas heat. The luster on the star ain’t what is used to be.
Sure, the Star is worth a lot of money but any self respecting HC who wants what all great NFL coaches have - getting to choose their own assistants, having full control of the locker room and discipline, having control of the message to the media, and having the final say with player usage and playing time is not happening. In Dallas, those powers reside in the owners box.
Jerry’s recent positive comments about both McCarthy and DC Mike Zimmer give plenty of room for the possibility that Big Mac and Zimmer along with some other assistants will be re-upped with new contract offers.
The question is will Mike McCarthy want to come back? He will probably have at least three options:
If I was Mike McCarthy, there is no way I’m coming back to this situation. He’s had 5 seasons to try and bring Dallas back to at least a conference championship game and has failed. Winning one wild card game in 5 years is not what he was hired to do. And he’s seen how his bosses have no problem throwing entire seasons away with no consequences other than to fire those under them,
- Stay in Dallas after given a 2-3 year contract extension.
- Take another HC job like in New Orleans where he has ties from his early days as an assistant coach.
- Retire. He will be 62 next season, so retiring is not out of the question.
Big Mac has had 5 years to watch up close and personal what a challenge it is to try and coach a professional football team where the owner is also the president, GM and face of the franchise. IMO he would be crazy to stay here.
Decisions will have be made soon. What will they be?
Dak, easily. It's not even close. We should have a poll. Are fans more disappointed we resigned McCarthy or Prescott? Lol

Yikes. At this point, regardless of how the Cowboys finish, it looks increasingly likely that Mike McCarthy will be offered a contract extension here. Whether he accepts is another story.
Anyone check our home record this season?Agree Bob, getting the vibe that Cooper may have saved Mike’s job somehow.
He’s done such a fine job.I think MM comes back if he wants to. The question is, who else is there to coach the Cowboys? The person has to fit the Jerry mold and as we should know by now, that person is not going to be some young inexperienced, or unaccomplished coach from somewhere else. It could be Mike Zimmer, but Zimmer to me is a notch under MM in terms of accomplishments.
I just think it will be MM if he still wants it. If not it will be Zimmer.
Don‘t disagree with you. Home record is awful at 1-6. Where I disagree is about firing. If Jerry decides to move on from Big Mac he will simply let his contract expire, not fire him. Just like Jerry did with Jason Garrett. He didn’t fire Garrett, he just didn’t renew his contract.Anyone check our home record this season?

We deserve it.Probably getting a raise. Hahaha

Not a single players in the NFL cares what team they play for. They all, all, play for money. And the losing and failure for so long has made fans delusional and insecure. The cowboys are a franchise that top players have interest in playing for. literally last offseason Derrick Henry wanted to be here. Parsons wanted to play here, jeanty wants us to draft him. it’s the jones who choose not to use free agency or make wrong decisions with roster making. Generations of families grow up and into life as cowboys fans, the cowboys are absolutely a destination franchise. I’d be gullible if I was saying the cowboys could pay less and still get players. I’d be gullible if I was saying we have had success in the last 25 years or so.
Now whether or not ownership capitilizes on that is a seperate issue. The cowboys are the most talked about, most written, most viewed team for a reason. People love them and others equally love to see them lose, and they love to see them lose because of the status of the franchise.
The failing since 95 has been brutal, but they are still the Dallas cowboys. That doesn’t mean Jerry’s a good owner or Stephen makes the right decisions but they are a Mount Rushmore American sports franchise. I’m not sure if your too young or too in your feelings to understand this.
Part of the reason for Jerry’s inactivity or complacency is because we are the Dallas cowboys. An institution - so he knows the money and fans and ratings will be there. It’s a product of his success and the franchises historical success.
Jerry will let Mikes contract expire.Lol, agree but Jed looks at things differently than most. I thought he was fired no later than Monday after the PO loss on Sunday. I knew when Tuesday came and no firing he was coming back.
Yea but that’s just a technicality. If you decide to move on or part ways letting someone walk it’s arguably the same thing.Don‘t disagree with you. Home record is awful at 1-6. Where I disagree is about firing. If Jerry decides to move on from Big Mac he will simply let his contract expire, not fire him. Just like Jerry did with Jason Garrett. He didn’t fire Garrett, he just didn’t renew his contract.
The first person that needs to be fired is GM Jethro. This off season was horrendous and it had zero to do with MM.Don‘t disagree with you. Home record is awful at 1-6. Where I disagree is about firing. If Jerry decides to move on from Big Mac he will simply let his contract expire, not fire him. Just like Jerry did with Jason Garrett. He didn’t fire Garrett, he just didn’t renew his contract.
why would he go to chicago? another poor run organizationThere is a small part of me that would love to see Jerry try to bring McCarthy back and McCarthy give him the middle finger on the way out, but I doubt it happens.
Unless a team like Chicago is interested in him, I just dont see why he would leave. Personally I think that would make a ton of sense if they dont go the Ben Johnson route, but thats another topic. Is going to coach the Jets or Saints a better situation? I doubt it.
I bet McCarthy comes back to Dallas, Schottenheimer takes the fall and Jerry hand picks the next young offensive guru to learn under MM for a couple years as they are groomed as the next HC.
Not a single players in the NFL cares what team they play for. They all, all, play for money.
Which means they care. No one wants to play in California - Taxes. Not a single players in the NFL cares what team they play for. They all, all, play for money.
I think he will want to stay. Any competitive person will want to finish the job.My question is…if McCarthy is offered to stay, will he agree to stay?
