A premier franchise to own, not work for. If Jerry wants McCarthy back and is willing to pay what McCarthy thinks he deserves, sure he’ll be back. Otherwise, many college head coach jobs pay what NFL head coach jobs pay. Being the Dallas Cowboys head coach is nothing special. It will be about compensation. He’s not going to give Jerry a discount just so he can say “I work for a premier franchise”.Why would McCarthy willingly walk away from this job? Even if he has fallen short (he has) he’s a competitor, you don’t get to his level and have the success he’s had and say “I’m done I’m not good enough”- these guys are wired to have full belief and confidence in themselves to the point of irrationality.
Secondly, while we all deserve to be frustrated, annoyed and resentful of this organization- they still are the Dallas cowboys. They are still a destination and they still are a premier franchise in all of sports, even if the only winning they’ve done of late is on the balance sheet. There’s no doubt SOME coaches will want full control, or Jerry may turn some off but most and many many many would absolutely still be intrigued to coach here.
He would love to be back- there’s 32 of these jobs in the world and you don’t walk away unless your way up there in years or there’s a health issue or your told to.

”intrigued to coach here”, what an idiotic statement.
Yes, “everything is about compensation“, it has nothing to do with “premier franchise”.You guys are letting your disdain for the franchise cloud your judgement. McCarthy will get a fair deal. Being the coach of the cowboys is absolutely still a premier spot.
Everything is about compensation…lol that’s saying nothing. Jerry wants to be right about McCarthy because he hired him- he’ll have no issues giving McCarthy a fair deal.
BULLET!My question is…if McCarthy is offered to stay, will he agree to stay?
Well…McCarthy has put his house on it….as in on the market. Hmmmmmm………BULLET!
Both parties will agree to return. Put the house on it.
That's what I'm saying!! There isn't a better coach out there that is going to want the job and putting up with the Jones Klan.Who is this elite head coach? Because from where I am standing only Bill Belichick and Andy Reid have been inarguably better than McCarthy in his era. Check the resume.
He's gone.Well…McCarthy has put his house on it….as in on the market. Hmmmmmm………
And right now, the richest owner in sports has the 16th highest paid HC in the NFL. Two of the four HCs in the NFC East are paid more than Mac. Even Washington pays Dan Quinn more than McCarthy.A premier franchise to own, not work for. If Jerry wants McCarthy back and is willing to pay what McCarthy thinks he deserves, sure he’ll be back. And you know he has the offer some how?I wouldn't.....at all. I'd take a NEW 5-year deal with a team where the bar is much lower. Winning seasons are huge success
Who knows what's going on within the DC org, but by all looks and appearances MM is not getting the support he needs to be successful. If he decides to come back I'd have to think be believes they can turn it all around,,, which is ridiculous, lol. That's like betting on drawing to an inside straight. For most of this season I thought like many Cowboys fans that Mike McCarthy‘s tenure in Dallas was over either during the season or more likely, at season’s end. Now after what has transpired on the field plus the exit of Bill Belechick from the NFL stage, I’m thinking it is more likely Jerry tries to keep Big Mac in Big D.
Why is Jerry likely choosing to try and extend McCarthy? Because he probably knows the number of talented NFL coaches wanting to come to Dallas as the next sacrificial lamb on the Jones failure altar is dwindling like a flower in the Texas heat. The luster on the star ain’t what is used to be.
Sure, the Star is worth a lot of money but any self respecting HC who wants what all great NFL coaches have - getting to choose their own assistants, having full control of the locker room and discipline, having control of the message to the media, and having the final say with player usage and playing time is not happening. In Dallas, those powers reside in the owners box.
Jerry’s recent positive comments about both McCarthy and DC Mike Zimmer give plenty of room for the possibility that Big Mac and Zimmer along with some other assistants will be re-upped with new contract offers.
The question is will Mike McCarthy want to come back? He will probably have at least three options:
If I was Mike McCarthy, there is no way I’m coming back to this situation. He’s had 5 seasons to try and bring Dallas back to at least a conference championship game and has failed. Winning one wild card game in 5 years is not what he was hired to do. And he’s seen how his bosses have no problem throwing entire seasons away with no consequences other than to fire those under them,
- Stay in Dallas after given a 2-3 year contract extension.
- Take another HC job like in New Orleans where he has ties from his early days as an assistant coach.
- Retire. He will be 62 next season, so retiring is not out of the question.
Big Mac has had 5 years to watch up close and personal what a challenge it is to try and coach a professional football team where the owner is also the president, GM and face of the franchise. IMO he would be crazy to stay here.
Decisions will have be made soon. What will they be?
Good points, but dont be so sure Fat Mike or any other coach would not want the job in Dallas. For most of this season I thought like many Cowboys fans that Mike McCarthy‘s tenure in Dallas was over either during the season or more likely, at season’s end. He would, he enjoys it and you can always use another 5 million. My question is…if McCarthy is offered to stay, will he agree to stay?
