Miles Austin out in Dallas

Defensive end DeMarcus Ware wasn’t the only longtime member of the Cowboys to part ways with the franchise on Tuesday.

Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports that wide receiver Miles Austin has also been dropped from the roster. The move will save the Cowboys $5.5 million under the salary cap, but those savings will not come into effect until after June 1 because Austin has been designated as a post-June 1 cut.

Knew this was coming but thought it would be in June.

Well, they can do it now and designate him a "June 1st cut" (which is what they did), that way they can deal with his cap hit better and he can still find work in the meantime. Actually waiting till June would just screw him over, since most teams would have filled their holes at WR by then.

Cowboys released WR Miles Austin.

He'll be designated as a post-June 1 cut, allowing the Cowboys to spread out his $7.855 million in dead money. The move frees up $5.5 million in cap space, but the Cowboys don't get a penny of it until June 2. A former undrafted free agent, Austin was a feel-good story after erupting for an 81/1,320/11 line in 2009, but hasn't been the same since signing a seven-year, $57.168 million extension in September 2010. He has been positively racked by hamstring injuries, and caught only 24 passes across 11 games last season. Three months shy of his 30th birthday, Austin isn't going to have a robust market. Just doing the guy a favor and releasing him now so he can sign elsewhere.

For all the problems with Austin the past few seasons, I still love that Chiefs game where we went for 250 and made himself a millionaire.

I don't think he'll have any problem finding a team if he's willing to take a small enough contract.

Yeah, let's do him a favor when all he did for us is ride the bench and collect a paycheck. BOOHOO

Are you being serious right now? Why would your purposely hold him hostage on the team if you know you're going to release him?

now that they front office is making the smart and sensible choices, it will likely be 2-3 years before we are true contenders.
