This sucks. Probably the best timing for him as he was our best DE last year, and this year he faces competition from Hardy, Gregory, healthy Lawrence, Gardner & Russell, not to mention rumors of coaches wanting to bring him inside. Seems like a solid guy in the locker room, but we can't afford to pay him much more than he's getting.
Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey not at camp as he seeks re-worked deal
Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer
OXNARD, Calif. -- When the Dallas Cowboys arrived at Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station on Tuesday, defensive end Jeremy Mincey was not there.
Mincey is looking for a reworked contract and has been in discussions with the team since February. He is scheduled to be a free agent following the season after signing a two-year deal worth $3 million in 2014 that included $2 million guaranteed.
Orlando Scandrick when he was set to make $1.5 million. The Cowboys added a year and $9.5 million to his deal. Scandrick will earn $4 million this year, and his 2016 base salary was upped to $5 million.
With the deal, the Cowboys kept a key piece of their defense happy while also maintaining solid salary-cap footing.
With the recent deal for star wide receiver Dez Bryant, the Cowboys have plenty of salary-cap room to rework Mincey's deal or sign defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford, who is also set to be a free agent when the season ends. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Cowboys have roughly $17.8 million in cap space, but that does not account for the per-game roster bonuses Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain will earn during the season.
It's unexpected but I guess that is better than him complaining to the press all spring and summer. Hope they can work something out but they have a ton of DE's in the meantime if they cannot. He's under contract and losing money so I imagine this will resolve itself quickly.
I feel conflicted. While true he was our best lineman last year and he is vastly underpaid, I feel we can't keep giving in every time somebody is unhappy with their contract. Not to mention we have an abundance of pass rushers if he wants to make this into a big deal
Not really, his value among the other 31 teams is irrelevant, since it's highly unlikely that we release him or he holds out beyond the 5 days it takes for us to recoup some of his signing bonus. He played well last year and knows that there is a good chance that his production drops, since he will see the field less this year, significantly less on 3rd downs as well, so I can't say I'm surprised by this. If we can sign him for a longer term at a cheap price, maybe less that what he would get next year as a free agent with the same production, then I'd be all for it.
