Misgivings about Deuce Vaughn

I know. But I just think playing the odds is a better bet. The odds are against him becoming a good NFL RB. But like I said, I’m more than willing to be wrong. The “exceptions to the rule” make for great feel good stories.
The odds are against any RB that's drafted.

I watched a couple of games with Deuce Vaughn, and although he has some wiggle, and broke off some good runs in college, he also has an awful lot of plays where he gets stopped at the line of scrimmage. Due to his slight build, he gets swallowed up easily. I expect he will have an awful lot of carries in the NFL that go for zero yards - more than fans will be willing to tolerate.

He’s a great story, and I wish the kid well. But just based on their bodies of work to date, I have more trust that Ronald Jones will be a better back up to Pollard than Vaughn. Of course, I am MORE THAN WILLING to be wrong, but I don’t have a lot of hope that Vaughn will become a meaningful contributor in the Cowboys offense - at least not until he bulks up considerably. But even if he does, he still doesn’t have the break-away speed that you’d like to see in a backup gadget type RB.

Sorry to fans of Deuce, but that’s my honest opinion. I would have preferred picking Tucker out of Syracuse.
I should have warned you 9 pages before but the Cowboys picked him so right now a majority here are going to act like it is a home run and fight you tooth and nail.

I liked this pick for where we made it. With it that far into the draft I don't expect a lot but think the ceiling is high if he can receive and be a change up. But you make some good points.

Most receiving yards of any RB in this draft.

More rushing yards than any of the top 10 RBs in this draft.
He is a practice squad project at best unless he gets some magical beans that help him grow. This guy is literally 5’4

When he lines up as RB d-linemen are gonna make a habit of blowing him up on their way to the QB. I think he’s gonna have a few “Welcome to the NFL” moments. He seems to have it but he’ll need a bit of dog in him.

I think he compares closely to Boston Scott, same height a little quicker and slightly lighter. Scott tends to get lost behind his o-line and is very effective inside the red zone. I think Duece can have the same type of career if used properly. Both catch the ball well out of the backfield.

Whatever they get will be gravy. He's a 6th round running back for a reason. He's getting way too much hype here. Let's not break out the anointing oil just yet. Getting him in space in the passing game to help this offense is my expectations.

blindfaith =you have none.. lol might change your screen name as your personality traits based on posts say otherwise. IF IF IF IF OIF that ALL players drafted or brought to team playing for the first time are big Ifs and have to prove their worth 1st to 7th round and UDFAS and new FAS, Deuce isnt any different but being low rounder nothing to lose for team or player,...

you are Soley focused on this kid over his size and that just not way to evaluate him. his college production says otherwise, period end of story weve seen some of the best blue-chip big nfl players FAIL first round busts Heisman trophy winner shrivel up and dye because they were way overrated and over drafted.

this is 6th round pick there's absolutely nothing to lose as team or fanbase to just sit back and watch how it unfolds. zero risk at all. you all are acting like hes top 3 round pick we are counting on..if hes cut what did we lose? if he makes it ww have a special player because if you watch him and us his comp ie Sproles he has the tools to do the very same thing. thats the steal of the draft IF he makes it,

so why the need to worry or pronounce this a high risk fail alert player? its a 6th round pick and low 6th might as well be 7th at 212, it zero risk high reward pick..

no worries, if we cant put together a nice backfield there are RBs all over the nfl to go grab before game 1 to go with Pollard. relax and just the negativity and ZERO Faith is annoying to some of us because there no reason for it. you all acting like this pick wastes a roster spot , huh?? o_O:facepalm:
Huh what?

All I've been saying is put away the annoiting oil. Ive heard hes replacing Turpin. Hes Pollards backup. He's Sproles. Hes Barry. Hr should have Emmitts number. That hes a lock to make the roster.

Ive approached it exactly like you think I should have. Hes basically a 7th round pick that is extremely undersized going into a league that has historically shown that MOST tiny RBs never make it.

Maybe he will, maybe he wont. Im not going to cry about missing out on a late round draft pick if he doesnt pan out.

I watched a 35 minute highlight video of his efforts. I was highly impressed. Did a lot of damage against power 5 schools. The guy is small in stature but legit. It would be a great shame if the Cowboys don't figure out a way to get this guy involved in the offense...rushing and receiving.
Without KM here we just MIGHT be able to do that.

Scott is 5'6 203lbs.
Vaughn is 5'5 177lbs

Scott ran a 4.41 forty. 21 reps. Better vert.
Vaughn ran a 4.56 forty. 19 reps. Lower vert.

If thats what you call a close comparison, its because there is NO ONE to compare him to. Because NO ONE his size plays in the NFL.

Reminds me of Phillip Lindsay who was 5-8 190lbs coming out. Lindsay was faster but they had similar running styles and college production.

Lindsay @ Colorado 765 carries for 3,775 yards, averaged 4.9 a carry, 36 rushing TDs, 117 receptions for 1,084 yards, averages 9.3 a catch and caught 3 TD passes
Vaughn @ K-State 651 carries for 3,604 yards, averaged 5.5 a carry, 34 rushing TDs, 116 receptions for 1,280 yards, averaged 11.0 a catch and caught 9 TD passes.

Lindsay went on to rush for 1,037 yards, score 9 rushing TDs, caught 35 balls with 1 receiving TD, and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. He followed with another 1000+ rushing season the following year before the wheels fell off and his slight frame and injuries caught up with him.

I could see Vaughn with similar statistics. He's a guy Dallas could either run until his tongue drags the ground and get a couple of good years out of him, or use him sparingly and maybe get 3-4 out of him. I don't think he's built for a long NFL career, but has the skill for A NFL career.

Seems coaches think he's the next Pollard if and maybe a big if his 177lbs holds up. We hear his combine numbers were poor due to sickness or something. We will see how things go in camp and see if what he did in college holds true against NFL calibre players.

Vaughn had lower average yards per carry and average yards per touch but also over twice as many attempts for each and more yards per reception with over 3.5 times receptions Vaughn also played against better competition.

Boston Scott Louisiana Tech CUSA conference
6.4 YPC 9.6 YPR 6.7 YPT
Deuce Vaughn Kansas State Big 12 conference
5.5 YPC 911 YPR 6.7 YPT 6.4

While Vaughn's game tape is impressive, I really don't see him as much more than a "gadget". I doubt he would "spell" Pollard for extended plays or, heavens forbid, replace Pollard if injured.

I still see RB as a priority and hope the team is scouring the waiver wires once TC begins

You cannot sleep on this guy, he will make you pay the price. I have watched him in college and he is more than what you see. Never a doubt for me when they picked him and my evaluation of the draft immediately took a better outlook.
