Just a little sidenote, I never really liked to listen to Dottie sing, but that gal wrote some of the best gospel songs that have ever been written. She gets a house in the high rent district of Heaven with some of her songs. What a writer.....

That she was. And one of the sweetest women I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with. She was real close friends with Dolly Parton as well.

I couldn't wait to get home and read this thread. But before I did, my 12 year old is now awake obviously.

Name an Elvis Presley song. "Jailhouse Rock." How do you know about that song? "It is played everywhere, movies, commercials, TV shows, video games."

Name a Beatles song. She didn't know one off the top of her head. I asked her if she knew who they were. "Dad, everybody does."

I swear to you, I have never laughed so hard at a thread in my life as this one. It is beyond amusing.

Now, off to read.

I think that is his point mike. Elvis facilitated the exposure of black artists to wider audiences.
Wikipedia again...

Performers like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, came to national prominence after Presley's mix of musical styles was accepted among White American teenagers.[263] Rather than Presley being seen as a white man who 'stole black music', Little Richard argued: "He was an integrator, Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music."[266] Al Green agreed, saying; "He broke the ice for all of us."[266] It has also been claimed that Presley's sound and persona helped to relax the rigid color line and thereby fed the fires of the civil rights movement.[267]

Some did but i highly doubt to the same extent as white kids flocked to MJ's music.
I will definitely agree with this.

That is exactly what I said earlier, I know who they are but can't name a song. So it is okay for your daughter but not for us.

Well, that's good because this is not something I have said and it is not anything I would ever support.

My personal favorite is not Elvis, from that time period. My favorite, and I have his CDs in my Truck always, was Sam Cooke. I love his stuff. It might surprise to know that right this minute, I have Michael Jackson, Elvis, Sinatra and the Beatles in my truck right now. I like them all but I like Sam Cooke more then any of them.

To me, it's not about who was more talented. I've already said that I thought Jackson was more talented. It's about who really started it all. That's why I give it to Elvis. Your correct, there were great performers other then Elvis. Chuck Berry was terrific but Elvis opened the way because he was unique. He was white but had the ability to walk in both worlds. He brought something across the barrier that grew. Only he, or somebody like him, could do it. Of course, I don't believe that the world has ever seen another like him so you can make case that only Elvis could have done it, I don't know.

Sam's death was also untimely and a terrible loss. He really didn't get a chance to make a real impact. He's one of my favourites as well. As for your points on Elvis, the case is clear that he was unique and was influenced by black music that he brought to a white audience. Truly historic stuff.

That's not what BB said. Read his post, he said in "Great Numbers". Also, he never claimed that this was fact, he just said that he was highly skeptical of it.

I was just talking to my co-worker who is 55 years old. She actually told me she would be suprised if I "could" name an Elvis song. She was joking and said she knows how HUGE Frank Sinatra was but she can't name any of his songs.
I find that every bit as funny as the idea of not being able to name an Elvis or Beatles song.

How can someone not know Sinatra? Again, just like before it's not my cup of tea, but you can't have ever watched a Yankees baseball game in your life to not know a Sinatra song.

She is all over the media (TV and Radiao), seen parts of her videos while i channel surf, etc....

I'm sure i've heard the names of more than 1 song, but i just don't remember them.

I know who a lot of musicians are and have heard someone mention the names of their songs, if its not information i like to retain i usually don't.

Do you remember every single thing you hear?
The difference here is that Britney Spears is not an iconic figure in American culture. Michael Jackson is. Elvis Presley is. Frank Sinatra is. The Beatles are.

To know you don't like someone's music you have to listen to it first generally. How can someone tell me they do not like KISS if they have never listened to a KISS song in their life?

I couldn't tell you the name of a Britney Spears song. Maybe some day I will be able to.

30 years from now if someone tells me they "honestly could not name a Michael Jackson song," I promise you I will find it every bit as funny as I have this stuff so far.

It is virtually impossible not to know something by the icons named above.

I don't know a Frank Sinatra song. I'd know it when he sings it, tho. Cuz I know his voice.

If someone else were to sing his song, they'd get the blank stare.
