Listening to local sports talk radio, they said somebody from the Cowboys was on and said Parnell is the best swing tackle in the NFL.

A couple of the radio hosts said they don't think there is any dropoff from Free to Parnell. I guess some media is finally coming around. LOL.

The radio guys were worried about Bern replacing Martin.

Was that somebody Jermey Parnell, by any chance? :)

I agree, though, that I'd worry about replacing the pulling OG more than I would the RT at this point. Easier to protect the RT if you have to. I'm not too worried about sitting either guy for a week, though. We've also got good OL depth this season.

I think Martin plays and Free sits. Same OL lineup as weeks 7 thru 10.

Mickey Spagnola should have called in.

He still has a corn cob up his keister regarding Jermey Parnell.

It's been in place for well over a year now.

Spags was ragging on Parnell about whiffing on some run plays in the Eagles game on Talkin' Cowboys earlier in the week, most likely on Monday. These were the three bad plays Bryan Broaddus mentioned in a tweet about Parnell.

Tyron Smith had two big whiffs in the Eagles games and has had plenty of them during this season.

I can't recall Mickey ever having an axe to grind with our LT (maybe he has and I missed it).

I don't mind anyone taking issue with bad plays from Parnell or any other player, it's just that Spagnola comes across as someone who simply doesn't like our swing tackle and isn't objective in his assessment.

I was disappointed Parnell didn't play with more power and aggression against Philadelphia.

I hope getting starter's reps in practice this week will help him play at a higher level.

I hope that Parnell uses these last two games (plus playoffs) to wrestle the starting RT position from Free once and for all. He's bigger, stronger, and younger than Free. He needs to use the offseason to work on his footwork to take the next step in my opinion.

Parnell is also going to be a lot cheaper than Free next year IMO. Free is never going to have more leverage after this year, has been playing next to a Pro Bowl caliber OG and Center and this offseason will likely be his last chance at a big multiyear deal.

He is already the highest paid ROT in the NFL according to Sportrac (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and his salary would be even lower except they renegotiated down to the cap hit they would take from cutting him (7 MM). Opinions are all over the map on him but I don't think the team will offer him his current salary and Free will likely be looking for a pay increase, not decrease.

So, Parnell represents a huge drop-off from Free, and we should be happy that Doug might only miss one game. Am I reading this thread correctly?

I believe there is a definite drop off from Free to Parnell. However, it is manageable.

I agree that there is some drop-off, but I believe it is only the experience factor. I believe if Parnell were to take over the starting job he would eventually be better than Free. He just hasn't seen everything teams and great defenders can throw at him.

Now, I admit I could be wrong on that and maybe we've already seen Parnell's ceiling, but I just don't think we have based on his natural attributes.

I'd love to see him take these two weeks and wrest the job from Free (because of age and talent differences), but I don't know if that's enough time for him to show Dallas should pick him over Free if they have to settle for one of them (which I believe they will).

I think he needs more seasoning than he can get.

How many freaking off seasons does he need? He's had 5 already

I still think Free will negotiate. Maybe his wife and kids refuse to move. Keeping both Free and Parnell if within good cap management is possible then you have the RT and swing tackle taken care of. There are too many problems on defense. If at all possible then wrap them up and concentrate on the D and maybe a WR esp a speed guy.

We're stockpiling OTs this year. There must be some reason for that.

I think Free would accept a reasonable restructure, too. He's earned more than he's getting, but not tremendously more. He's in the right neighborhood. Maybe he gets a bump, but it shouldn't break the bank. If some team wants to offer him too much, then we've got some options.

Just nitpicking here because it seems to be a common misconception, but Free is listed heavier than Parnell.

Maybe it's because he's been planted a few times, but most everyone just doesn't seem to realize that Free is the largest guy on the current active roster.

Parnell is too passive for my taste but rewatching the all-22 he was not as bad nor as inconsistent as I had first thought. We ran a LOT of plays and by the time Parnell came in we were running the same plays for the third or more times. We ran that same stretch play at least a dozen times. Gimp Martin was just as problematic.
