If Doug Free leaves and Jermey Parnell stays, we'd need to have another option on hand in case of injury and/or poor performance.

Darrion Weems will be back and looks like the current favorite to become the new swing tackle to me, but he hasn't played a regular season snap to date.

Because of this concern, I remain open to drafting a RT early.

Cap hit or base salary?

A cap hit includes base salary and past signing bonus pro-ration along with various other types of bonuses that might be in the contract.

Doug Free made $3.5M last year and this year, which is a number I can handle.

Anthony Collins is making $4M ($6M next yr), Phil Loadholt $3.4M ($4.4M next yr), Andre Smith $3M ($4.6M next yr), Todd Herremans $3M ($4M next yr) and Austin Howard $2.9M ($4.9M next yr).

What will it cost to keep Free?

Will he amend his contract and play out the final two seasons at much lower base salaries or is he looking to cash in as a free agent?

willing to bet Dallas resigns Free and runs with the young tackles they stockpiled this yr instead of resigning Parnell.

I'm not buying the no drop off argument, there was a drop off last time free got hurt

I would take that bet. Parnell isn't a lock to be here next year but the odds of Dallas and Free coming to salary terms is pretty small IMO. This is going to be one of those topics that is beaten into the ground (if it hasn't already) and right after the season the news reports will be that Dallas has made a offer to Free below his current salary and he is expected to have higher offers elsewhere.

They should just setup it up like an auction with Parnell's and Free's agents. The first one to take an offer gets the job.

I'm hearing Free has a bone spur and a stress fracture. He'll be out for a while IMO. Seize the moment Parnell! !

I have to wonder if Doug Free has been compensating for his right foot and it led to the stress fracture occurring in the left foot.

We need Jermey Parnell to rise to the occasion.

I want the NFC East crown today!

Sure, but if you are Free's agent you are never going to have more leverage than you will after this season and you are going to want a raise from 3.5MM, not a paycut. Dallas knows that right now, which is why I really don't see Free coming back.

I expect Doug Free's agent to be thinking exactly that.

It will come down to what Free wants, IMO.

Biggest pay day possible in free agency or stay with the Dallas Cowboys, possible contenders next year?

The drop off in the running game and our struggles to pick up the blitz

There was no drop off in the running game in Jermey Parnell's first start against the Giants.

He wasn't as good in the ground game the following weeks against the Washington and Arizona. The blitz issues against the Skins were primarily in the middle and DeMarco Murray was the main culprit. And let's give those defenses some credit, the same goes for Philly's D last week.

Parnell has graded out as the best pass protector on a per snap basis out of all the Dallas OTs this season on PFF.

He did not give up a sack in the 3 (now 4) games that he has started this season. He was better in power run blocking than Free in the 4 games that he has started. He only issue in the 1st three starts was the timing on backside blocks on the zone stretch running plays. He appears to have that down now after today start.

He had an excellent game today.

Why wouldn't they go after him.

I hope the team settles the RT situation before free agency starts.

This is a good time to be a Dallas Cowboy.

Talk to Doug Free and Jermey Parnell, let them know there is only one spot on the roster, and take the best offer.

I would be shocked if they didn't.

I'm cheap. Parnell isn't a hidden treasure anymore.

:)

I've been enamored with Jermey Parnell's upside for a long time.

If he can get on the field and stay there, Parnell has a high ceiling, IMO.

He just needs real snaps.
