Former Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart will soon join the Eagles' coaching staff, according to a league source. Stewart was the the defensive coordinator under Wade Phillips when the Cowboys went 13-3 in 2007, but he was stripped of his play-calling duties midway through the '08 season. Phillips fired Stewart a few days after the team's humiliating 44-6 loss to the Eagles.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid and Stewart have remained close since they were at Northern Arizona together in the mid-80s. Reid coached the offensive line and Stewart played cornerback. Both men grew up in Los Angeles and spent time at junior colleges in the area.

With defensive coordinator Jim Johnson taking a leave of absence as he receives treatment for cancer, secondary coach Sean McDermott has assumed his duties. Stewart's role hasn't been officially announced, but it's likely he'll coach the secondary. That was his expertise on Marty Schottenheimer's staff in San Diego before he followed Phillips to Dallas in 2007.

Reid obviously has a huge comfort level with Stewart, but it doesn't hurt that he'll get to pick his brain on the Cowboys' 3-4 defense twice-a-season. Stewart was set to join former Vikings and Cardinals head coach Dennis Green with the San Francisco representative of the United Football League, but he'll now remain in the NFL.

Joe Trahan's WFAA Sports Blog tipped us off to this story. Somewhat interesting sidenote: Eagles tight ends coach Tom Melvin, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, former offensive coordinator Brad Childress and Reid all spent time on the Northern Arizona Lumberjack coaching staff.

Good hiring as a secondary coach.

Not sure about picking his brain about Phillips' 3-4 since its not a static defense, with a bunch of set tendencies. Stewart probably can't do much more than tell coaches what they already know from facing it.

I think the obvious implications of this is that Jim Johnson is not coming back and Sean McDermott is now the Eagles DC.

Yes, which is very sad, but good for Cowboys fans.

I wish Jim Johnson well in his battle with cancer.

And Stew went from the Cowboys D Cor to the UFL and then back to the NFL as the Eagles DB's coach all within a six month time frame.

That's a very odd road to have traveled.

They may handle him like Seattle handled Ray Rhodes when he had a stroke and had to give up his DC duties.

He was able to return, but his duties were severely limited upon his recovery. He also worked out of the booth.

I hope Stewart tells them every thing he knows because from the looks of our defense with him in charge he had no clue *** was going on.

Report: Stewart lands job with Philadelphia

Former Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart has joined the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles, according to our friends over at the WFAA Sports Blog.

An announcement is expected this coming week. The hire makes sense, given the circumstances in Philadelphia. With Jim Johnson battling cancer, secondary coach Sean McDermott has become the Eagles' acting defensive coordinator.

Stewart coached the secondary in San Diego before joining the Cowboys in 2007 as the defensive coordinator. He was fired in January. The Cowboys ranked eighth last season in total defense, but finished 20th in scoring defense.

I am not worried. Stewart is an idiot and whatever he can inform about Wade and his calls have been on tape for 30 years.

Good pressure defense is good even when you know it's coming. And it will be coming hard next year.

That will be a huge blow to the aggressiveness of that Eagles defense, losing Dawkins, and now Jim Johnson, arguably the best DC in football, I think the birds will struggle and having Stewart there, just makes it more of a mess in terms of defensive cohesiveness, because his DC duties in Dallas diminished each and every week until Wade took away his play calling duties.

Maybe he'll work out for them, I say he'll be a disadvantage to that defense.

But congrats Brain on the new team and Job title, whatever that may be.

Man I wish you wouldn't italicize your posts. It makes them harder to read. You don't need a gimmick to get noticed.

That scares me a bit.

I am glad I am not the only one. The eagles will get a great advantage playing against us from this.
