It depends on how they're credited. Is it a missed tackle if a defender who is being blocked gets one arm on a guy but doesn't make the tackle? If it's a clear opportunity to wrap up a guy, then it probably is fairly accurate (as far as what can be seen, given that what goes on in the middle of the pile cannot).

Anyhow, as long as each player's missed tackles are credited the same way, they're still useful for making comparisons. I'd be more interested in the missed tackles kept by STATS LLC, but PFF's numbers are the only ones available at the moment.
I hear ya, I just think those numbers seem pretty low.

Drew Boylhart [thehuddlereport.com] crapped all over Taylor Mays in his analysis report. Called him basically a track guy that has no football skills or instincts. Basically said he's a bust waiting to happen, and rated him as a 4th rd talent. Drew said Mays will light up the combine and fool some dumb team into drafting him, and then will be a total bust. Said that Pete Carroll "hid" him and his many deficincies in hoping he [Pete] could get another USC player drafted in the 1st rd by some dumb team.

Man I am so glad you guys don't run this team.

Hamlin is the quarterback of a very good defense. You may have noticed that while he was out, the defense got much worse.

No it didn't.

How about Asante Samuel's 19 or Sabby Piscatelli's 20?

Samuel makes plays and Piscatelli is just garbage.

I'd take Samuels 9 picks and 19 missed tackles over Newmans 2 picks and 6 missed tackles.

We need ballhawks on this defense!!

Nate Allen or Earl Thomas will do.
Yes to these guys. No to Taylor Mays. He started for 4 years and had a total of 5 picks. 1 int the last 2 years. If you are looking for a ball hawk it ain't him.

Ken Hamlin > Gerald Sensabaugh

But I am on board with those who want to improve the secondary coaching.

It's really not even close. Better in coverage. Better against the run.

Newman had three picks this season. (The sixth time he has had at least that many, tied for the most since he has been in the NFL.)

And to determine whether Samuel's six extra interceptions had a bigger impact than his 13 missed tackles, you'd have to look at the results of all of those plays. If you intercept a long pass on third down and it doesn't result in points, that probably doesn't make up for missing a tackle that leads to an opponent's touchdown. I'm not saying that's the case with Samuel, I'm just saying that you'd have to look more closely before knowing for sure that Samuel's impact was more positive than Newman's. And that doesn't take into account the extra completions Samuel allows because of his gambling and freelancing (not playing how his coaches tell him to play).

Wade almost always finds ways to talk optimistically and positively about his players, especially his starters. Ken Hamlin does do those things, but notice that Wade does not say that he's a playmaker. Because he's not. Guaranteed that, although he publicly praises what Hamlin does well, Wade wants a ballhawk at free safety that can capitalize on the errant and/or hurried throws his patented front-7 pressure creates. That Hamlin does not, has not produced in that capacity (since his first season with us)... and that he makes WAY too much money for his production (Jerry, the General Manager, has input on this, too)... we will be looking to cut or trade Hamlin & replace him with someone who can help round out Wade Phillips' ideal design of a defense; crazy pressure up-front, fast, athletic secondary that causes turnovers as a result.

Hamlin is as good as gone.

Hide & watch.

I agree. Wade likes to be positive in press conferences regarding his players. But that does not mean we are not going to look to upgrade at key positions. FS being one of them.

I'd like to draft another corner and move Newman to safety, what do you think?

And that's on the money.

Some USC homer tried to tell me that football instincts could be taught to this guy.

Trust me, they can't. His natural talents aside, he will be exposed in the big leagues.

I preferred it when Ball was back there over Hamlin

There was no real drop off and I thought some improvement when Ball took over
