I'd also put in a word for Spider Man

it's spawned a bunch of comic book to screen adaptations, that are coming in at a record pace

Good call Bob - but I'd have to say Xmen - it came out 2 years before Spiderman, and it jumpstarted the Superhero genre - which have pretty much dominated the entire decade.

(edit - I guess the question isn't the most influential movie of the decade - my bad! )

SO I'd go with Gladiator

I doubt there could be much agreement in any way.
Most of these movies are niche and don't transcend that. I never saw one of the LOTR movies and am not interested. I never saw a Harry Potter and am not interested.

I saw the Dark Night, (as well as Batman Begins), but that fits in the comic book niche and people outside of that niche, largely don't care.

Brokeback was a well made movie and I was impressed, but it will have it's own stigma for some time and we know why.

For the most part, people have different concerns this decade and no movie has been strong enough to pull them all together and away from them.

Not to mention that movies as entertainment has seriously diminished with games and computers eating away at most leisure time.

I agree with the niche factor-- and actually Simmons and Connelly did talk about that as well. But I do think certain movies still transcend the niches. I think almost everyone saw "Dark Knight" and "Gladiator" and you can recall several scenes from those movies. Not so sure about "Brokeback Mountain" though... everyone knows what it's about, but I don't think everyone saw it.

BTW, "Jerry McGuire" is one of those '90s movies that EVERYONE saw and remember scenes and dialogue from.

Still a little too "niche" though. Not everyone saw it.

That movie was a huge deal when it came out, but I really haven't heard many reference it recently.

Maybe it's bigger in the Church-going demographic, though (which would make it memorable, since that's a large portion of the American public)
"It's just the one that people will TALK ABOUT for years to come-- something everyone has seen and will remember."

So, if broadcast and cable television are constantly re-airing the movie year after year after year, no one will talk about it year after year after year  Kinda makes me wonder why anyone mentions The Wizard Of Oz anymore.

BTW- anyone think "The Hangover" could make a late charge this year? Everyone was talking about it for a few weeks after it came out.

Yeah, I lost the entire point of the question after reading Bob's answer, and my mind went to the most influential - see my edit above! :D

The Passion Of The Christ. Final answer.

Over the years, public conversation about the movie may increase or dip at times, but the film has a significant tie-in with seasonal television much like The Ten Commandments, etc. That alone should keep it in the public eye and discussion for several decades to come.

Good one and good points.

Well, I certainly can't deny that TV has a huge role in what movies are remembered for years. But it doesn't change the fact that they ARE more memorable. Again, it's not about "important" movies or even good movies, just what we will still be talking about 10 years from now.

After all, would anyone have talked about "Top Gun" for this long if TBS hadn't aired that thing every weekend afternoon for the last 15 years?

BTW-- "Sixth Sense"... another memorable '90s movie. Man, 90s>>>>00s

Yeah...Hollywood would do anything to downplay that movie. They refused to fund it and did all in their power to make it fail. Now they for sure will not be giving it any post mortem kudos. If anything, Hollywood is extremely anti-Christian....not anti-religion at all....just anti-Christian. In fact, I think it is written law in Hollywood to produce at least one film per year on religious persecuton of the Jewish faith....and many Halocaust-related movies have been excellent. There are just very transparent reasons why movies related to Christianity find it so hard to get funding there....but I don't want to turn this into a discussion on religion or politics.

So back to the movies.

Bold--> This I agree with. There will be movies offered as examples which may have received critical acclaim, box office success, etc., but may not fit the mold for 'everyone'.

So back to the movies.

You're right.

Nobody would fund Robert Duvall's "The Apostle," either. He paid for it himself.

I'm not sure any of the last 3 you mentioned are all that into the public conscious though. They're all good movies, but again, this isn't about the "best" movies, but rather the ones that people will talk about for a long time.

"Departed" might be included, not quite sure yet.

Well I talk about them, so there!  :D

Wow, I was looking up movie charts by year... was '99 one of the most memorable movie years EVER?

- Sixth Sense
- The Matrix
- The Blair Witch Project
- The Green Mile
- American Beauty
- American Pie
- Fight Club

Not to mention movies that are close to memorable:
- Varsity Blues (cable TV effect)
- The Mummy
- Any Given Sunday
- Eyes Wide Shut
- South Park (first feature length movie)

1990s also had Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, Titanic and Dances With Wolves to go along with all the other memorable movies mentioned.

2000s really pale in comparison.

Hey, I wish more people would talk about them. I think they're 3 great movies that flew under the radar.

Old School is pretty memorable from this decade, but certainly not from a "critically acclaimed" sense.

One movie not mentioned from the 90's is "The Crying Game". Any unsuspecting sucker that watched that one would certainly remember it.
