Most underrated Cowboy

We have an overrated thread so I thought I'd start the opposite. Who do you think is the most underrated Cowboy past and present?

Present I'd say Newman. Let's face it, corners only get recognition if they get lots of INTs, so Newman was overlooked by most last year.

It's hard for me to pick one for the past because I don't know the pre-90's teams as well and in the 90's with all the attention we got not many people were underrated. I guess I'd go with Lett because most people just associate him with those 2 plays and forget how good he was otherwise.

For non-Cowboys fans it probably is Newman (still don't know how Hall got into the PB over him), but amongst us I'm going with Ferguson.

I would say Bledsoe for sure.

It seems to me that he's been overlooked and underappreciated by most Cowboy fans for whatever reason. But without him last year we might have been a 4 or 5 win team.

On defense Newman is the obvious choice, but Henry seems to be an unsung hero as well.

Definately Newman first , Witten second .
I think being in the pro bowl 2/3s of his career takes him out of the "underrated" category.

Al Johnson. He's better than everyone thinks, I believe. Al Singleton. Matt McBriar. Scott Shanle. (He did an admirable job filling in for Dat.)

I'm not sure about Al Johnson or Singleton, but I agree Shanle is definitely a hidden gem on our roster.

In fact I'm glad that Parcells decided to bring Shanle back, after all he said himself that he likes to 'collect' linebackers. And Shanle fits the classic blue collared, hard-nosed mold that Parcells salivates over. Scott will provide excellent depth, might even see him push for a starting job in 2008.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he'll compete for a starting job. I think that position is solidified with Bradie and Ayodele; however he is quality depth and good special teams.

I stand by Al Johnson. I still think he'll be a good center and he did a better job this last year than people give him credit for.

Al Singleton is underrated because, like we've all seen before, the reasoning that we didn't notice him until he was gone. He probably won't start anymore with Carpenter here, but I still respect the player and like him.

any team without their starting QB = 4-5 win team . . . take manning, brady, palmer, leftwich, rothlisburger, any QB out of the roster and a team will be a 4-5 win team. and i wouldnt say bledsoe is under-rated he was well on his way to the pro bowl leading all NFC QBs for a while, then dropped off . . .

Newman is definately under-rated by fans but not in the league, fans will tell a cowboys fan that our secondary consists of roy williams . . . and a GM will come at you and say "dallas has a top secondary in football with the exception of FS." so judging by fan vote newman is under-rated but in the league he gets his respect. and i wouldnt say Hall is over-rated because Chad Johnson - top3 WR in the league said that thats who he "competes" with.

Well you might be right, but I like Shanle's play regardless.

As for Al Johnson, I think he is the better blocker in terms of passing, especially out of the gun which is critical for Bledsoe since he seems to flourish in that formation. I hope that we can end the musical chairs with Gurode and Johnson once and for all with one of them emerging as the clear cut ANSWER this summer.

I agree about Singleton, he too will provide quality depth and a fresh body in rotation once Carpenter is ready to start, likely by midseason.

Actually the Pats didn't do to shabby when Blesdoe got hurt in 2001, same thing with the Steelers in 2004. They went from 1-1 with Tommy Maddox in the lineup to 14-0 with a rookie the rest of the way. A lot of fans in jacksonville actually prefer their back up (David Gerrad) over Leftwich and want him to start. I belive he has a 6-2 record in relief of Leftwich over the last few years.

As for last season Bledsoe, yes he was on his way to big things until The Hotel went down, I truly believe had Flozell stayed healthy this team would have made the playoffs and Bledsoe would have finished with well over 4000 yards.

the thing about the stealers is Rothlisburger > Maddox and had many weapons around him and stepped into a run-heavy offense only having to pass 20-25 times a game.

Leftwich is far superior to Gerrard, especially with how he has progressed over the years, it sucks to see Jimmy Smith go because i loved that trio of Taylor, Smith, Leftwich. Gerrard is a strong backup and most teams dont have that.

remember when vick went down before schaub progressed into a solid backup? that was hell for a good ATL team.

there are very few teams with good backups in the league and my whole point is that if the average team (the average team doesnt have a good backup QB) loses their starting QB they will immediatly become a 4-5 win team. there are maybe 5 or 6 teams that have good enough backups that this wouldnt happen, but for the most part . . .

the most underrated Cowboys are:

Lynn Scott, Ryan Fowler, Scott Shanle, E.J. Whitley, McQuistan, Stephen Peterman, and Tom Crowder

they are the FUTURE of Dallas

they are the reason we are Super Bowl bound.

Da hell! They are most definately not the reason we are superbowl bound and they are not the future of the cowboys. Hmm I could not help but notice they are all white and they all have VERY VERY Tiny tiny roles on the team right now.
