My vote is based on how Cowboys fans rate the team's players, and I'll say Roy Williams is the most underrated. Sure, he made the Pro Bowl, but way too many of his own team's fans (as well as a lot of other people) think he's overrated -- but he's not. As I've said many times, he makes more big plays in all aspects of the game (sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles, etc.) than any other safety. Some guys get more interceptions (Ed Reed when healthy) but don't get the sacks or forced fumbles. Some guys get the sacks (Adrian Wilson) but don't get the interceptions or forced fumbles. Roy makes big plays in every different way, along with his big hits and run-stopping ability, and he does it despite not being used in a way that would maximize his impact. He gets knocked for supposedly going for the hit and missing tackles, but that's no more common -- and probably less common -- than the missed tackles by any other Pro Bowl safety. And he gets slammed for his coverage. But having charted every pass attempt against us last season, I don't think his coverage was a problem at all. There were very few plays when I marked him down for allowing a completion of any significance.

Al Johnson and Aaron Glenn might be underrated by more Cowboys fans, but those who underrate Roy do so by a greater degree.

I think the problem with Bledsoe is that he's a very unique QB. He can really wing the ball with the best of him. Throughout his career with NE, Buffalo, and even Dallas last year he's shown that he can be very effective even if he's playing without a very good running game and receiving corp.

However, he's very reliant on the pass protection. If it's good, he's downright excellent. If it's not, his production greatly drops off.

And when the pass protection is good, fans will just say that "well, anybody can be effective with good pass protection."

That's not exactly true. Good pass protection doesn't really greatly impact McNabb's effectiveness. The same could be said for Vick. But in both of their cases, the quality of the WR's have a much more of an impact on their production.

Last year I would have said LaRoi Glover. This year I'd say it's Greg Ellis. He had as many sacks as anyone on this team, and most people wouldn't value him above the tissue beside their bed.

Terry Glenn
Yeah. Can't go wrong picking Terry Glenn here.

Not only does the guy not get his due, he's typically seen as "too old" (despite his productivity) and many fans can't wait for the Cowboys to burn a 1st round draft choice on his replacement.

The Answer thinks that Glenn is more of a biproduct of Bledsoe's success, so I'm not sure if he quite fits into the 'underrated' category. And like many other players, he really hasn't done much without Bledsoe. Plus he has only had 3 seasons where he had 1000+ receiver yards, but never back to back seasons of at that level of production....something we all should be concerned about.

Going back in time a little bit, his career had a ferocious start back in 1996 when he made it to the superbowl his rookie season in New England. Then after that it was mired with injury, inconsistency and even suspension. He had somewhat of a resurgence in 1999 but eventually was in the doghouse again, especially when the Belechik Regime began their lombardi reign in 2001.

Glenn then went to Green Bay and had a mediorce season, then was dealt to the Cowboys to be reunited with Parcells in 2003. Once again injury and inconsistency plagued his career the first two years here until last season when he rekindled his chemistry with Bledsoe.

Is Glenn overrated? Underrated? Or just another average receiver? Either way 2006 is a big season for Glenn as he looks to silence his critics.

yea..Shanle is a bum. He stunk it up last year.

If he's such a bum why was he resigned? You don't think that Dat's retirement had something to do with Shanle's emergence? The Answer believes that Dat probably knew that if he couldn't come back 100% that Shanle would be breathing down his neck on the depth chart.

You do realize that we were 5-1 with Shanle in the starting lineup before he hurt his ankle in the Denver game right? He played with a strong motor and it seems we were a better run defense with him in the lineup. Not to say he is ready to be a full time 16 game starter, but in rotation he will be a beast. I'm more than happy with hardnosed players like Shanle providing quality depth for this football team.

How can it not be Newman? he shuts everyone down whoever he is against, I understand that to get recognition by the media or a pro-bowl you need to get Ints so hopefully he can do that this year, but as of right now Tnew has to be the most underrated.
The reason Newman is currently underrated is that for his first couple years he was arguably overrated. Last season was the first season he played as you described. If he doesn't make the probowl next year, he's criminally underrated by the rest of the league. It takes announcers, fans, and "experts" a year or two sometimes to catch up to reality --they're not sending him to the Probowl because of his performance two seasons ago rather than last season.

He's not overrated around here. We know. We watch.

Akin Ayodele

He seems to be lost in the shuffle around camp lately.

This guy is a solid tackler and may prove to be our best linebacker this year.

I think being in the pro bowl 2/3s of his career takes him out of the "underrated" category.
underrated by the fans the fans are only 1/3 of the voting
