My son knows the kid who returns punts for the New England Patriots. Met him at several camps. Can't remember his name. I think Jones. Anyway, he's small as Turpin (maybe thicker), but was an excellent special teams player. Made his way onto the Patriots roster for special teams.
People underestimate special teams players, but it's not for the faint-hearted.
But to answer the question, the No. 1 quality for a returner is BALL SECURITY. Turpin is as sure as they come.
Also, he ranks 11th out of 70 punt returners with a 12.4. And only two returners have scored touchdowns this year.
He's doing fine as far as I'm concerned. He'll break one eventually. But as long as he catches the ball and doesn't fumble, I'm good.
