Moving up the draft

Bill Stratton, Lawton, Okla.: Why won't Dallas do what it takes to move up and draft Adrian Peterson? He is a potential franchise back.

Mickey: Sure he is, but I'm guessing he's going among the top 10 picks, maybe the top five. According to the draft day trade chart, the difference between the 22nd pick and say, the eighth pick, is 620 points. That is the equivalent of the 30th pick in the first round, which means you would have to give up at least two first-round picks to move up high enough to get to No. 8 - or your first, second and third. And if you have to get to number five, then that's a 1,000-point difference or the 16th pick in the first round. That's pretty steep, this year's first and next year's first, at least. Or this year's first, second, third, fourth and fifth. Is Peterson that good?

per DC.com

I don't see that as too steep for Peterson or Johnson. Dallas will be 22nd or worse next year and two of those types don't equate one franchise player.

You are taking a huge gamble he will be as good as 'all that', won't get injured, and he puts you over the top.

I don't see any back in this draft worth that kind of gamble.

You'd be mortgaging part of your future just to get the chance you could draft him.

Do you think it within the realm of reasonable possibility Dallas can execute that kind of draft day trade? And would it really be worth it? You love the guy but is a RB going to put us over the top?

Judas Priest in concert. What is the fascination with Adrian Peterson on the Cowboys that so many people lose their freaking minds?

I think he's a great player and prospect. I would not spend what it would take to move up to grab him. Move on already, he won't be a Cowboy.

I am assuming from this post that you think that the price for trading up to get Peterson would be "too steep". I respect your perspective, as always, but I think that if Peterson is healthy, and stays healthy, that if we could reasonably trade up and get him (using the draft value point chart) that in hindsight the cost for moving up will look like garage sale prices. I think his talent is equal to or better than L. Tomlinson at the same stage in his career. I think he is the single most talented player in this draft deserving of the number one overall selection.

How he performs in the NFL will be largely dependent on who drafts him, but on talent alone, this kid has RARE ability and based on all reports is a good person as well.

I guess its an opinion, but he does not have Tomlinson type skills

I think Peterson will be a good RB, but he isnt going to dominate the league, and if he does its going to be short lived because of his running style...and the fumbling issues along with the yr after yr injuries are a real cause for concern

if he fell in our lap or could be had with a reasonable trade up I wouldnt be opposed, but as Hos as said breaking the bank to get him would be foolish

If he had Tomlinson like skills I would be ultra motivated. He doesn't. Tomlinson is an outstanding receiver. Peterson has caught 24 career passes, now maybe he can develop as a receiver, but he's not in that class yet. Tomlinson is also dangerous as a passer. To my knowledge Peterson has never thrown one pass.

Just because someone is the best RB in a given draft doesn't mean they are in the same league as the guy who is the best in the NFL at a given time.

The price to move up from 22 to get him is too steep and given the fact we have 2 RBs on this team who are producing it is a foolish cost. The unholy need to get rid of Julius Jones is comical. No, he isn't the next Emmitt Smith. He also isn't the next Hambrick.

I simply wouldn't pay the cost to move up for him. I like the kid and always have. But the fact is we're picking at 22 and he ran a 4.38 time in the 40 and there are teams ahead of us that need a RB. They can trade up too. We're not the only team with options of trading up. This makes the price too high.

I probably should bookmark this so I can have it handy tomorrow when someone thinks we should trade up and get Peterson and explains how it is plausible. I don't believe it is plausible or possible at all. I think there's a greater chance we'll go undefeated in 2007 and I don't think that is plausible or possible either.

No, its not. Having watched every game LT played at TCU, and almost all (what 25 games?) Adrian played in for OU, LT was a better prospect coming out. And if you think he is the single most talented player in the draft (over Calvin Johnson) then you are insane (no offense) & you obviously went to OU.

These scenarios are a waste of time. If we are gonna move up, hopefully it would only be a couple spots to grab a position that is of far greater need. FS (Nelson)

I think astroturf and all other synthetic fields should be outlawed.

I think referees should be full time referees who spend the off season preparing for the season and traveling to training camps to teach coaching staffs and players.

I think the sissy pass interference rules need to be done away with. A simple touch foul should not equal 50 yards.

I think anyone who thinks a trade they can pull off in Madden 2007 is possible in the real world should be in a rubber room.

I think Nyquil should be on everyone's shelf.

I think revolving doors ought to illegal because they try and eat people.

I would have included the word "younger" in there.

Depends on what you mean by younger. Oftentimes younger officials don't have the temperament to deal with screaming coaches, aggressive players, intense games, and pissed off fans. That's why they washout at the high school level.

BTW - my favorite thing about the new stadium isn't the size, the grandieur, the class, the fact that I love it's location (second best option behind Dallas), but the fact that it will be a GRASS FIELD.

Oh and the clear retractable dome is pretty cool too, but I would prefer football be played in weather.

Seriously.

Basketball refs should be banned until they reach age fifty.
