wouldn't offer him anymore than a four years 16-18mil, running backs are a dime a dozen, Norm on the ticket had a great breakdown on running backs that carry a huge load in one year and what happens to their production in the next couple of years after, huge drop off........as was seen with Barber....I'd rather the cowboys franchise him for a year and then let him walk..

The difference between the likely franchise number and what we're going to want to pay him per year in any reasonable scenario is just going to be too high for that to be a viable option. Better to give him his best offer and let him shop it and take it from there. I don't think he'll get huge money on the open market...just a mil+ more/year than we're looking to pay right now. But if we decide to match it, we're a better location to be finishing out your career in than just about any other market right now.

Yep. Don't piss off the guy who might single-handedly bring us to the playoffs.

Was he not with us the last 3 years? Why didn't he "single-handedly bring us to the playoffs" any of those seasons then?

Not saying he's not having a great start to the season, but honestly no person single handedly has improved this team versus where it was last year. If we had the same defense as last year we probably not be 4-1, if we had the same O-line we would probably not be 4-1. The best thing about football is that it is the quintessential team game. Always was, always will be.

I like the one on our PS a little too. I wonder what kind of results he could be having with his speed and this OL.

yeah, buddy Ryan williams, I was just telling the guys on the radio yesterday that the Boys need to bring Williams up to the active roster and start giving him playing time

But who do you cut?

And then you're carrying 4 RB's on the roster (plus 1 FB) for a position where there's usually just one playing at a time.

You can't keep everyone..he is doing well but I don't see them offering him alarming money. They need to be frugal here IMO. This offensive line has been built to allow decent RB to do well behind it

They are not going to sign him for much less and then they are stuck with the contract for years.

Then they aren't going to sign him.

If they're starting at 4 years- $16 mil, then they sure as heck aren't going to go to say 4 years- $32 mil.

Ain't gonna happen.

And by offering 4 years- $16 they're telling me that they have absolutely no interest in the world in franchising the guy at $9.5 mil.

We prob cant afford him anyway might as well offer what you can and see if he wants to stay.

hes had injury history and hes fumbled 4 of last 5 games. Im glad Stephen is running the show because the plan is to get younger stay competitive for playing time and stop making stupid contracts for risky and players starting decline.

Murray is not worth a huge contract. If he does not like it, he can walk.

Dez is more important. We can get just about any RB to come in here and run behind this OL.

Really?

With that young offensive line, he could stay a pro bowler for the rest of his career.

I disagree with those saying Dez is more important. Murray is much more important because a consistent ground game always opens up an offense more than being pass based does. You game plan receivers no matter how good they are out of a game if you have no run game.

4 years/$4.5M is what I was looking at as realistic when the season started. He's outplayed that number now, and would be crazy to not at the very least test the market before making a decision if we're not willing to get up into the $6M neighborhood now. And we won't (and shouldn't) do that.

That said, people really are fooling themselves if they think 'just about any back' can do what Murray does. The fact is, most of them can't, and we'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who's 75% as good on passing downs as Demarco for next year. Most of the options we're going to entertain will be top-3 round rookies, and pass pro is the primary thing they're going to have to learn coming into the league. We're going to take a step back at RB if Demarco walks.

And *that* said, at more than $4.5/4 with some incentives added on, I let him walk and make-do managing it by committee for a season or two. We do have RB depth, and we do have a great system for a runner to flourish in. We should use it, because we need the money to address a defense that still has significant personnel limitations.

I just think the window is closing with this QB and if this team is gonna do anything in the next three seasons they don't have to do the same dance they've been doing with running backs since 22 left. They need to lock him up for four more seasons and make the most of his second contract.

Yep. Don't piss off the guy who might single-handedly bring us to the playoffs.

Why not?

His only recourse is to go out there and perform each week so he can get the payoff he believes he is worth at the end of season.

I think people are confusing things with running backs nowadays, there's a bunch of running backs that are pedestrian players and are not worth locking into a second contract, but in this day and age there's a VERY small number of backs that are franchise players these guys are the ones you don't let go cause with how scarce these guys are, chances are you're not going to find another one any time soon and you're going to be left screwing around carries between 3 different guys just like we have been the last several years. There is a very big difference when you have a true franchise player at RB and when you have running back by committee.
