My Thoughts On Escobar

Like many here, this is a pick I was confused by, and didn't really back 100%. At least at this point, I'm at peace with the pick, but I don't think this offense is going to be quick to use him. At least through a few preseason games, Hanna has gotten most of the plays with the ones, while Escobar only really gets into the game around the 3rd quarter.

So what I'm thinking, is maybe Escobar was a future pick. Like Witten, we drafted him as a thin, athletic TE and then Witten filled into form with his body and his blocking. That's my hunch on what they're planning on doing with Escobar too. If he does contribute this season, I think it will be only for the second half of the season.

We'll probably see him situationally this year, most likely in the red zone and in short yardage passing situations.

So, in the guy's third preseason game, he catches every pass thrown to him and scores a TD, and he's just a "dime a dozen TE?" Interesting analysis.

How about we actually let the guy play in the regular season, you know, when we actually run a full version of our offense before we judge the kid. You guys do realize most teams run vanilla versions of offensive and defensive schemes during the preseason, right?

He was a luxury pick, we had no hole at TE to merit this pick, much less a TE that needs developmental time. Its not like he's the second coming of Tonly Gonzalez, or a once in a lifetime TE type. The cowboys should have selected the best available OL/DL with that pick.

Its been obvious to me that we've been "hiding" our TEs in preseason. Romo even said as much. Not only Escobar and Hanna but Witten has rarely been targeted.

But escobar has been everything the team expected when they drafted him. They have big plans for him

I agree that SO FAR, Escobar hasn't showed much in the way of being a receiving playmaker. Even on his TD - When he caught it he was wide open, but by the time he squared and started moving towards the goal, there were two guys on him. He ended up barely getting in the endzone, but at least he got in.

I guess he has to work on getting deeper in the end zone when he scores. Geez tough crowd!

I think he and Williams were both "future" picks, with the idea that they would take over for Witten and Miles in the next couple of years, when their contracts either run out, or when they become too expensive to be worth it.

If you watched the game he looked slow and uncoordinated, plus he can't block. We had needs along both lines and still do. We would have been better served looking for lineman with that pick then wasting it on another TE.

I agree. Good point. I like that our drafts are taking a long view now instead of a special teams draft like 2009 or going for just immediate needs.

You didn't watch closely enough. I wasn't impressed. They way he ran, turned to get into the end zone, the way he ran was awkward. All leading me to believe he is uncoordinated.

Wasn't a fan of the pick at the time and I'm still not. But in fairness to him. It's going to take more than one pre season to show his real value.I think the same can be said for Williams. Rookies rarely come in and have a big impact on a team if they're at positions which are already a strength.
Fredrick will probably struggle too. But most of us won't notice or care because he'll still be better than what was there last year.

It's hard for a casual fan to pick up on these things.

If we needed a guy to catch short dumpoffs and not offer much else we could've just kept John Phillips.

Seriously.... people complaining about the speed and quickness of Escobar like they arent fans of Jason Witten. Yall are so confused.

Additionally, i dont mind choosing a TE in the second if they are serious about using a 2 TE formation a lot this season. My issue is the TE we chose. I dont believe we chose the best recieving tight end in the draft.
