My Thoughts On Escobar

I think he and Williams were both "future" picks, with the idea that they would take over for Witten and Miles in the next couple of years, when their contracts either run out, or when they become too expensive to be worth it.

I agree with the OP that a 2nd round TE pick was a head scratcher, though par for the course, but it's nice to see the organization anticipate future needs with TE and WR selections instead of waiting until problems become glaringly obvious (see OL) before taking action.

I think Escobar is going to be a very good player for Dallas. No doubt things like blocking he will need to improve on but the guy is a very good recieving TE. Right now offensively Dallas is not putting in much and are not game planning anything. Guys are getting their work in so to make issue of play calling at this stage is foolish. There are times I wonder if people even pay attention to the fact this is PRE SEASON?

Agree with this.

People really miss out on something when evaluating TEs. Most stink coming out of college at blocking. All of the guys drafted ahead of Escobar have blocking problems as well. TE is a complicated position, you just don't have many guys coming into the league that are great at receiving and blocking right out of the gate. Escobar has the size to be a good blocker, he just needs some more muscle and reps at doing it.

No doubt looking at him he should be able to add some size to that frame. I don't expect a finished product from a rookie, I understand he is being asked to do something at this level that he was never asked to do before which is blocking. He can learn and become better as many other receiving TE have had to learn. Meantime I think Dallas will have a role for him as a rookie and a vision of what they want him to do in the future to become a more well rounded TE.

Like many others he was not someone I expected the Cowboys to pick but he is the pick and given Witten age and how the Cowboys liked Escobar I have no issue with it even if it was not the guy I would have selected

Agreed. But they do expect him to be a redzone presence this year. The organization is fully aware of how inept our team was last year in the redzone and were determined to find a couple more options for Romo, options that could make an immediate impact. So you get a big receiver like Terrance Williams and a pass catching TE like Escobar.

I could care less about his blocking right now. I expected it to be bad.

The word was he was a dynamic receiver. That is what I want to see. A 6'6 guy that can get open and make plays like a wide out. Not a dime a dozen TE that is only going to make plays underneath on defenses.

He needs to be Gronk like and not John Phillips like.

I expect him to do both. Make the tough catch in the middle as well as take it down field. The ability to make the tough grabs in traffic is not a dime a dozen

I say screw it, he's a bust. It's been nearly a month and he still looks like a rookie.

sneak him on to the practice squad...........

I wasn't surprised with the pick at all. Lots of folks had us linked to the TE out of Notre Dame. Obviously I had no idea what TE we would take but figured 2nd or 3rd round TE was a good bet.

For a win now team that had holes on the ol, at safety, and depth at dl the te position wasnt way to go when there were other options. If we picked up another ol, dl, or s they likely would be contributing more at this stage. However, as others said this pick is about the future and provides good te depth this season.

Its been obvious to me that we've been "hiding" our TEs in preseason. Romo even said as much. Not only Escobar and Hanna but Witten has rarely been targeted.

But escobar has been everything the team expected when they drafted him. They have big plans for him

Not sure Witten even has a catch yet.

You don't "future pick" at the TE position.

TE isn't a position where you have to have everything planned out or else your entire team is doomed.

Most teams don't even have a very good TE yet seem to get by. Given that 2nd rounders come with a 4 year contract, what exactly is the "future" anyway? If not this year, will it be next? Or is this a situation where Dallas will get to see him play a decent role and develop during his contract year?

For a guy who's supposedly a dynamic threat in the passing game, sure haven't seen much to suggest he'll even be on the field a great amount with the starting unit. I don't think he will to be honest. I think Williams is going to get a good chunk of snaps and as long as Witten is playing the #2 TE will be on the sideline in 3WR sets.

I think people are stuck in the past with the 'TE' thing. We've had move TEs in the past but they weren't common. Now they are and they aren't blockers who can catch the ball some anymore. Many are in the Kellen Winslow and Shannon Sharpe mold; big WRs who are asked to block some.

I dont wanna predict how Escobar will pan out but all I will say is this. Whoever would have been the highest rated interior offensive lineman on the board in round 2 would be a Dallas Cowboy right now if it were up to me.

Escobar caught more in 1 game than Tellus caught in his entire Cowboys tenure.... I may not have liked the pick, but I like it much better than the Tellus pick.....Tellus came from an offense that hardly utilized him. Yes, he was a great blocker, but he was very subpar as a receiving TE. Escobar comes in as a great receiving prospect, but is a very poor, probably non-existent blocker at this time. I would much rather have a receiving TE that needs to learn how to block, than a blocking TE that needs to learn how to run routes and catch the ball.

So, while I am not pleased with the pick, he did look good on Saturday. I don't expect him to be gangbusters right away. The NFL is bigger, stronger, faster, and far more polished.....so it will take time. One thing is for sure, having Witten as your mentor can only help him.
