My thoughts on Stanback...

I think Stanback is going to come back, and impress....

I truly think we're dealing with a phenom athlete here. We're not nearly the only team in the draft who thought Stanback could be a #1 wideout in this league, and a damned good one. This was not a guy they were hoping would be the 2nd coming of Patrick Crayton or even Hines Ward, but something much more. Check out this video clip:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-cant-miss-plays/09000d5d80ada053/WK-2-Can-t-Miss-Play-Fast-Felix-Jones

-- it is the highlight of Felix Jones' 98-yard kickoff return against the Eagles last year.

In this video you'll notice that Stanback is the only player on the field who is catching Felix Jones. That should give us all some clue about this man's speed and athletic prowess. Because not only does he close on Felix Jones from behind, but he does so from almost a full stop and having to close the distance between he & the sideline as well. Not dissimilar to what T.O. showed when he caught Julius Jones on that pretty run against the Saints. Only this is more impressive, because Felix is obviously much faster than Julius ever thought of being. And Stanback was tracking him down from behind, at a bad angle. He does catch Quintin Demps, he of the 4.35 40-time, and lets up just enough to bump him from behind as Felix scoots into the endzone.

Simple fact: Very. Impressive.

Stanback has rare athletic gifts, my friends. It's why we have been, and in my opinion will continue to be, patient with one Mr. Isaiah Stanback. I believe firmly that he will again be our 5th wideout this season, and will see playing time in specific packages this year.

During training camp of his rookie season, amid a scrimmage with the visiting Broncos, Stanback was described as "torching" Champ Bailey for a TD in live action. And indeed, his first few days of camp he was torching cornerbacks, catching 80-yard TDs and generally flashing the potential that made us spend a 4th on his talents.

As much as Kevin Ogletree and/or Manny Johnson may have shown to this point, neither have flashed anything like what Stanback is capable of. Which is why I suspect one or both will be prized additions to our practice squad this season, while a healthy Stanback again resumes his role as 5th receiver... and continuing project, and deepening facet to our offense as the season goes. It is a simple fact that we don't have another wide receiver on the TEAM with as much "potential" as Isaiah Stanback.

I agree that it is just potential until we see evidence of it on the field. And I agree that he must stay healthy for all of this to be true. I'm optimistic that he will. Based on what? Optimism. I think the best thoughts I can for Isaiah Stanback, because the fulfillment of them brings me much joy; and would bring Cowboys fans a lot of FUN to see him become what he's capable of.

If he doesn't, he doesn't. But I'm truly hoping he does.

He's had some bad luck with injuries for the past few years. But you give a world class athlete like Stanback a few more chances, especially because it's injury (not performance) that has slowed his progress thus far. Every word on the subject I've heard from the Coach & Owner's mouth is that Stanback is sometimes unstoppable in practice, even against Newman. Or, *ahem*, Champ Bailey.

Ogletree & Johnson don't have "that", and you give "that" a chance until you're very, very sure.

Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Stanback spends the rest of camp nursing one injury after another and they wind up cutting him. Could happen. But that's not the outcome I envision, or suspect. I think Jerry's infatuated with Stanback, and perhaps rightly so. Because if this case of injury clears up and he's able to start showing his stuff on the field, I think we'll see a clear difference between him and our rookie receivers. I'm pretty sure the coaches already have.

'Consistent' is the key, yes. But with a little luck, and maybe some will, we're gonna see Stanback become what we all really do want him to become. Or at least, we're gonna see him with the 'boys for at least one more run. Be a fan. It's more fun.

So many words, and so much time spent thinking about a guy that will be cut. Can't trust his health + roster crunch at other positions.

He could put together one or two good years elsewhere, but he's got Donte Stallworth-like health issues.

Props to the post.

Although your wrong. He's a bum and will be cut. The experiment is over. Give me a WR who can stay healthy.

Basically what you are saying is...

he’s fast.

Did you know that many on the team have said Ogletree is one of the fastest guys on the team. So if what you are looking for is speed, why not go with a guy that has played the WR position before, fast, young and so far injury free?

If Stanback gets well and EARNS his roster spot and CONTRIBUTES this season, then it will be a pleasant surprise. But at some point you have to move on. This is a make or break season for him...and so far, not so good.

To show how much human beings enjoy speculation and projection ... after months of idle offseason speculation comes to an end and we have 79 players actually participating in football activities for the first time in months, we then have to turn our attention to speculate on the one guy who isn't.

He will be a goner.. They should just end the Glassback experiment. I was excited about him when he first got here. But after injury after injury my enthusiasm faded.

I doubt it, and I'm not happy to have to write that...

Stanback seems to be one of those tightly muscled athletes who's ALWAYS pulling or straining something, and teams don't keep players around who are constantly hurt...

It's too bad, but at this point it seems pretty clear that the guy's just fragile... I had high hopes for him, but those hopes are fading fast... again, it gives me no pleasure at all to rain on your parade, but I don't see him being successful in the NFL...

In fact, I don't see him making the 53 man roster this year...

C'mon, Slate, being injury plagued doesn't make Stanback a "bum"...

A bum is somebody with no talent... he has talent, he just can't stay on the field... he's not the first exceptional athlete to have that problem; going back in Cowboys' history, Mike Sherrard comes to mind...

One of the principal characteristics of a successful NFL player is durability to go along with exceptional talent. Stanback may have talent, but without durability to go along with it, the talent never has a chance to surface and develop.

Proof is in the pudding. Stanback has stayed around because of his potential, but his time has run out.

Stanback is clearly talented. I've seen it many times even on his kick returns. The problem is, he is always injured. At some point you just have to move on because some people are always injured. This to me is his last season if he gets injured one more time. ...and he MUST return soon.

Hey guys, Randall Williams can run the 40 in 4.0 flat. :)

Seriously though, I think all of us were hoping Stanback was going to turn into a receiver, but he hasn't, and he's probably not going to. I really think the 5th wideout spot is completely up for grabs this camp and preseason, but I don't like Stanback's chances of being back again.

The thing about Stanback is that he is fast on paper, but doesn't seem too fast on the field. Maybe straight line speed, but he just doesn't look fast on that first step or coming out of breaks. I'll pass even if he is healthy.
