I think Stanback is going to come back, and impress....
I truly think we're dealing with a phenom athlete here. We're not nearly the only team in the draft who thought Stanback could be a #1 wideout in this league, and a damned good one. This was not a guy they were hoping would be the 2nd coming of Patrick Crayton or even Hines Ward, but something much more. Check out this video clip:

-- it is the highlight of Felix Jones' 98-yard kickoff return against the Eagles last year.
In this video you'll notice that Stanback is the only player on the field who is catching Felix Jones. That should give us all some clue about this man's speed and athletic prowess. Because not only does he close on Felix Jones from behind, but he does so from almost a full stop and having to close the distance between he & the sideline as well. Not dissimilar to what T.O. showed when he caught Julius Jones on that pretty run against the Saints. Only this is more impressive, because Felix is obviously much faster than Julius ever thought of being. And Stanback was tracking him down from behind, at a bad angle. He does catch Quintin Demps, he of the 4.35 40-time, and lets up just enough to bump him from behind as Felix scoots into the endzone.
Simple fact: Very. Impressive.
Stanback has rare athletic gifts, my friends. It's why we have been, and in my opinion will continue to be, patient with one Mr. Isaiah Stanback. I believe firmly that he will again be our 5th wideout this season, and will see playing time in specific packages this year.
During training camp of his rookie season, amid a scrimmage with the visiting Broncos, Stanback was described as "torching" Champ Bailey for a TD in live action. And indeed, his first few days of camp he was torching cornerbacks, catching 80-yard TDs and generally flashing the potential that made us spend a 4th on his talents.
As much as Kevin Ogletree and/or Manny Johnson may have shown to this point, neither have flashed anything like what Stanback is capable of. Which is why I suspect one or both will be prized additions to our practice squad this season, while a healthy Stanback again resumes his role as 5th receiver... and continuing project, and deepening facet to our offense as the season goes. It is a simple fact that we don't have another wide receiver on the TEAM with as much "potential" as Isaiah Stanback.
I agree that it is just potential until we see evidence of it on the field. And I agree that he must stay healthy for all of this to be true. I'm optimistic that he will. Based on what? Optimism. I think the best thoughts I can for Isaiah Stanback, because the fulfillment of them brings me much joy; and would bring Cowboys fans a lot of FUN to see him become what he's capable of.
If he doesn't, he doesn't. But I'm truly hoping he does.
He's had some bad luck with injuries for the past few years. But you give a world class athlete like Stanback a few more chances, especially because it's injury (not performance) that has slowed his progress thus far. Every word on the subject I've heard from the Coach & Owner's mouth is that Stanback is sometimes unstoppable in practice, even against Newman. Or, *ahem*, Champ Bailey.
Ogletree & Johnson don't have "that", and you give "that" a chance until you're very, very sure.
Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Stanback spends the rest of camp nursing one injury after another and they wind up cutting him. Could happen. But that's not the outcome I envision, or suspect. I think Jerry's infatuated with Stanback, and perhaps rightly so. Because if this case of injury clears up and he's able to start showing his stuff on the field, I think we'll see a clear difference between him and our rookie receivers. I'm pretty sure the coaches already have.
'Consistent' is the key, yes. But with a little luck, and maybe some will, we're gonna see Stanback become what we all really do want him to become. Or at least, we're gonna see him with the 'boys for at least one more run. Be a fan. It's more fun.
