My thoughts on Stanback...

I feel like Stanback is where Miles Austin was two years ago. That's when Austin couldn't catch. Last year, Austin's hands finally developed and this year his route running has followed.

This is Austin's 4th season, but he showed flashes in his third. If you take into account Stanback's lisfranc injury, his first seasons was almost a redshirt season (we knew that when we drafted him). Stanback's development seems on track with what we've seen from Austin and Hurd. The only difference is that Stanback seems to get injured more easily than either Austin or Hurd.

I feel like the guy can still develop, but he may get caught in the roster crunch. Carrying an extraa QB and K will be Stanback's demise. Otherwise, we'd keep 6 WR.

Remember how many of us wanted to cut Austin during his 2nd season?

Who would be more likely to get picked off the practice squad: Stephen McGee or Kevin Ogletree?

I agree with the original post. I think Stanback will play a vital role in 2009, and even if he doesn't, I still think he has the #5 WR spot sown up.

Jerry the GM's finger prints on the roster.

DC and I had this discussion last night;
I say do what Head Coach Landry told Parcells; Landry told Parcells 3 main things, one of them was that you keep a player if you see talent till his 3rd year in training camp. That player must show you something by his 3rd year.

So, in retrospect, this is Stanback's 3rd year, let it play out in training camp, then see.

I like Ogletree too, so let the best player step up.

No more excuses for Stanback, he must step up or else.

The way ogletree is playing in training camp, I dont think you will be able to sneak him onto the practice squad. Its kinda like when the cowboys had Hurd and Austin as undrafted rookies. Parcells called several general managers around the league and asked them if he could sneak them through waivers and onto the practice squad. The gm's said, you better not try it, they will get picked up.

Thats what will happen with ogletree, with romo saying good things about him, you wont be able to sneak him onto the waiver wire.

And ogletree runs a 4.37 in college before his knee injury. Thats is the fastest wr we have in camp. No one has posted Stanbacks true speed, so I dont know his speed. But Miles Austin runs a 4.42, so Ogletree is faster.

Bottom line, 53 roster spots and 8 Practice Squad spots. Those 8 spots are governed not by the 53 spots, but by who you can place there and that you don't mind if they get "stolen."

It's cause and effect football style fellas.

Let the cacophony begin.

You know he's injured again and has missed a week worth of practices already right? While Ogletree is actually on the field. It's not like Stanback has done anything in his career to make him a guarentee roster spot no matter what. I hope we cut him next week.

Are you forgetting those 3 catches?

I'm 100% with you.

I'd hate to see the team cut a player like Ogletree who - get this - is actually performing, and performing well, for another year of the Stanback experiment.

I believe it was 2 catches for 12 yards. Don't forget that Austin only had 5 catches in his second season.

Stainglass is closer to being the next Jacob Rogers than he is to being the next Jimmy Smith.

Who the heck sits out practice with a hammy injury when his job is very much on the line?

You're hurt? You practice. You're injured? You're injured.

Right now, he's hurt. He practices. The fact that he isn't is enough to think he should be cut for me.

"Potential is nothing. Performance is everything."

I think it speaks volumes of who he really is. ANY discomfort and he has to baby it. I've played through far worse injuries in highschool. He needs to man up and realize he could be out of a job pretty soon.

Props to the post.

Although your wrong. He's a bum and will be cut. The experiment is over. Give me a WR who can stay healthy.

i hear ya, but i cant help but think of jimmy smith. We let him go to early, and bam, you saw what he turned out to be for the jags. I say put ogletree on the practice squad, keep stanback one more year, and if he gets hurt, then bring up ogletree, or go get a a vet after week 6.

I say Ogletree won't make it to the practice squad.

Why can't we carry 6 WRs: That would be Williams, Crayton, Austin, Hurd, Stanback and Ogletree?

Everyone thinks that we can't because there are only 53 roster spots, and so carrying Buehler means you can only carry 5 WR. But there is one guy that we can cut to carry a 6th WR and that's Laudisauceur (sp?).

He's a top-notch snapper, but that's ALL he does. If Dallas can find someone else to adequately snap balls for kicks then you cut Laudisauceur and have a spot for the 6th WR spot.

But he does contribute, unlike Stanback.

Ladouceur is a good deep snapper. And I wouldn't want to take him for granted to keep a project around for yet another year.

I'm suprised you're taking this stand on this issue cause you know he's gonna get hurt again.
No, I don't know that. I am not clairvoyant and unlike many I don't pretend to be.

Yes, I do know that. Do you know that Holley, Johnson, and Ogletree know more of the playbook than him? In your world is knowledge of that playbook an intangible that adds value to Stanback? In my world it is. Which is why I think 2 WRs will end up on the PS and he will end up on the 53 man roster.

If We let Stanback go he will get picked up by someone else and if he pans out for another team We will be shooting ourselves...I hope the Cowboys dont give up on HIm. Just give him another shot and pray he doesnt get injured. These other guys dont have anything more then number 2-3 wrs tops. Stanback has all the tools to be one of the better wr's in the league.

I dont know I'm very high on Him and giuve him more slack then most players. He needs to step up though. No more injuries.

got this from a writer tim that blogs cowboys practices;

[Comment From Landon]
I'm not necessarily a Stanback fan, but I do remember Jimmy Smith. If things are close between Ogletree and him, who makes the team?
2:56 Tim MacMahon: Don't know for sure. Jerry Jones remains enamored by Stanback's potential, but a lot of other folks are sick and tired of seeing him in the trainer's room.

It's real simple.

Stanback has until the end of camp to prove his worth.

If he doesn't....then cut him.

...even if Stanback can stay healthy he has a long ways to go to be an NFL caliber receiver. I'd just as soon they keep some of the other young fellas that actually played WR in college.
