MySa Blog: NFL fines Ball

It was a clean hit. I think the NFL is getting overly protective and way too fine happy when it comes to hits. How are the players expected to play physical defense if they're afraid of the flag and fine?

I had to watch the game on a grainy Internet feed, but it never appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit on my end.

I think that any call should be challenged, including all penalties. A bad penalty can ruin a game the same as a blown call on a close fumble fan. If the coach chooses to waste his red flag on a horrible ref call, he should be able to.

While I agree with what you are saying because the officiating is so bad, unless they kept it limited to only two reviews (as it is now) it would slow down the game too much

Further, officials I think would be hesitant to overturn poor penalty calls (or non calls) because its an admission they did a terrible job to begin with. For example, not calling that Chief defender for helmet to helmet contact on Romo inside the 5 was an utter joke. It was an easy call, and that official basically looks for two things- offensive holding and roughing the passer.

I agree...that is exactly what I meant. The same challenge rules would apply: Two reviews per game, per team. A lost challenge = a loss of timeout. Therefore, the game speed would remain the same as it is now.

I see your point of view, but sooner or later, there has to be some in-game accountability for the official's bad calls. A bad call could be the difference between a victory or a loss, and an apology two days after the game is over does nothing for the result of the game. To rectify the officials false admission of said bad call during a review, a separate review official could be used to judge all challenges.

That was a shoulder to shoulder hit, I have no idea what you guys are looking at to think that was helmet to helmet. Not even close.

Now if the refs are going to call that on Dallas, where was the roughing call on Romo??? The defender launched himself head-first in Romo's facemask and there was no call???

Whatever......I am used to getting screwed by the refs every week so I dont even get mad anymore. Seriously, everytime we make a big play I am expecting a flag to be on the field.

I thought Jerry and Goddell were tight??? I guess not the way the league screws us over week in and week out.

I feel like the NFL is laying out more fines this year than ever before. I'm waiting for them to start laying out fines for false starts and holds. Flozell will go bankrupt.

I've watched it twice...to me, clearly shoulder to chest with no head involved. He even turned inside to make it his shoulder. <Picture the famous Seinfeld episode about Hernandez spitting on Kramer and Newman> "His head came forward and down as his chest went back...forward and down...for that to be head to head, that would have been some magic (loogie/head)."

I saw that in the other thread but was hoping someone had the replay with a couple of angles.

Thanks.

Complete BS. I still don't understand the call being made on the field even with the speed of the play -- the whip action of Wade's neck appeared to make it look like helmet-to-helmet FROM the REAR. The line judge should have been able to clearly see that hit was not H-t-H.

great clip the last shot of it shows there wasn't any helmet to helmet at all hell Wade's facemask was hitting Ball's nameplate on his jersey

What a horribly blown call AND fine by the league

It look as if Ball even tried to pull his helmet down to avoid helmet to helmet contact. He should win his appeal.

I watched that replay at least 7 times, and it sure seemed like it was shoulder to shoulder IMO.

Yep. I watched the replay a few times and Ball definitely led with his shoulder while it looked like his helmet never grazed Cassel's facemask. BS call if you ask me.

If Wade's facemask did hit Ball's helmet, it hit him in the back of the head as a result of being tagged.

i've watched over and over in high def and it was definitely shoulder to shoulder. His head came forward from the force of the hit. BS penalty!

Ball lowered his shoulder. It's a BS call. Amazing how there were 2 shots to Romo's head in the game that didn't get called. I wonder if there were fines delievered to those players.

This is ridiculous. Anyone watch Ryan Clark's hit on Willis Mcgehee in the AFC Championship game last year? His hit was much more helmet to helmet and it didn't draw a penalty or a fine. In fact it was called tough Steelers football.

It's no wonder we are a soft defense. When we finally get someone to hit with a little attitude not only do we get a bogus penalty we get a fine too. DJ Williams hit on Roy Williams should have been a penalty according to the rules but no he doesn't even get a small fine after they review the hit. If I'm Jerry Jones I'm furious about that right now amongst many other things.
