IRVING - Reading between the lines, it sure sounded like it Monday when Williams was asked about Austin's 10-catch, 250-yard, two-touchdowns performance in the 26-20 overtime win at Kansas City.

Williams said he wasn't surprised Austin had a big day, considering that the Chiefs entered the game ranked 28th against the pass.

"I told (center) Andre (Gurode) before we left, 'Their secondary is going to struggle a little bit. As long as you guys can block them up front, there's no way a receiver shouldn't have over 150 yards,' " Williams said. "He kind of looked at me and laughed, but it was evident on film that they kind of struggle back there, and Miles had the game of his life."

Williams was asked whether he thought Austin had earned more playing time.

"The thing I say about any player in this league is consistency," Williams said. "You have to be consistent. That was the game of his life. He's going to cherish that forever. Everybody is going to remember it. That record is going to be hard to be broke. I'm shooting for it, but it's going to be hard to be broke. But you just have to be a consistent football player in this league."

Sounds like he's saying the Austin's performance might have been a fluke.

No matter what Williams thinks, Austin is going to get increased playing time. It's just a question of whether it will be at the expense of Williams or Crayton.

Williams not surprised by Austin's big game

By: Tim MacMahon

Roy Williams ribs weren't well enough for him to make the trip to Kansas City, but he expected a big game by a Cowboys receiver against the Chiefs.

Miles Austin delivered in record-breaking fashion, setting a new franchise standard with 250 yards on 10 catches, including Dallas' last two touchdowns in the overtime win over the 0-5 Chiefs.

"I told [center Andre Gurode] before we left that that secondary struggles," said Williams, who has 11 catches for 214 yards and one touchdown in four games. "If you guys can block them up front, there's no way a receiver shouldn't have over 150 yards.

"He looked at me and laughed. But it was evident that they kind of struggled back there, and Miles had the game of his life."

Well, at least Williams didn't risk aggravating his injured ribs by patting Austin on the back.

Is it me or does Roy Williams seem like He's constantly trying to convince people He's a good Wr?

I dont even think Owens would go as low as to down play a great performance like that. Seems like He's a little butt hurt.

Its no secret that I am a big fan of Roy.

But I have to admit I thought the same thing when I say that video earlier.

Disappointing.

I can;t believe the spin they are putting on this. Even more surprising is the fact that people are apparently (judging by responses) buying it.

Oh wait....no I'm not.

Well he's trying to convince us he's good because the evidence on the field points to a guy who is no better than a #3 WR.

Let's invent stories. I got one.

Gurode laughed when Roy said all they needed to do was protect Romo and someone would have 150 yards. Obviously, Gurode isn't a Romo believer anymore. He doesn't think Romo could get the ball to someone accurately enough for a WR to get 150 yards.

OK.

Your turn.

Attention coming Miles Austin's way
3:18 PM Mon, Oct 12, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Todd Archer/Reporter Bio | E-mail | News tips

Miles Austin did not chat with reporters today, but in some friendly back and forth he said he had more than 100 text messages on his phone after the game and he attempted to return most of them.

An encore will be difficult after 250 yards in his first start, but wide receivers coach Ray Sherman had a sit down meeting with him on the airplane ride back home from Kansas City.

"I just told him, 'Don't go Hollywood on me now,'" Sherman said. "I think he's going to keep things in perspective. We talked about that on the way home last night. He knows he's just got to be consistent. Everybody's seen this. Now everybody's going to be aware of it and there won't be any surprises."

Roy should stop speaking before someone reminds him that Austin in one game almost equaled Roys entire 14 game Cowboy career...

He should have just said Kansas City sucks, but I guess that would have been ungracious or what the hell ever.

I guess however you feel about Roy Williams you can twist HUD words accordingly. But the facts are there. He made comment to ag before game indicates that he was not suprised by austins game which means he understands the dudes talent.

No he doesn't - he thinks anyone should be able to get 150 yards so long as the OL can provide any modicum of protection. It could have just as easily been Hurd, Ogletree or Crayton.

Yeah I don't really see anything harmful about his comments. He basically said what Ray Sherman said...keep it up and don't let this just be a one game fluke.

No suprise someone would try to run to roy and cause some dissention in the locker room

roy should have just done the smart thing and kissed miles butt cause if not this is what happens. he shouldve know they would turn it into this

but pretty much what roy said is true. fans here after bashing him the first 3 game for his poor hands and route running are now proclaiming him are number 1 wr.

i like austin and his potential for some time now. but a lot of people are getting carried away. give the guy a chance at proving he can do it at a consistent level first before annointing the guy.

no one is expecting 200 yards every week but let him make plays regularly before we elevate him. not only is to early and crazy to know but its not fair to miles as well. people are going crazy and putting unfair expectations on the guy. watch everyone go crazy if he doesnt light it up againgst atl in a few weeks

Both include if Williams were suprised by austins big day. He says no. Gives a reason indicating kcs problems. Not any quote regarding Austin directly. No evidence of jealousy. If you want to think anything else your biz

...or he could just be challenging Miles to be that much better...he did have a few drops sunday...the history on Miles has been his inconsistency...a little rivalry in the receiver corps is a healthy thing i think...just think of Jenkins and Scandrick...it drives both players to one-up the other...

...a little petulant but it could end up making both players better...

...Austin is gritty/speedy and the flavor of the month but the season is longer than that...Williams is an integral part of the Dallas offense, whether receiving or blocking...the Cowboys need BOTH to be consistent over the entire season...

...Owens had games where he just went off and times when he virtually disappeared...

Sounds more like a challenge to Austin than it does malcontent. If the challenge fires Miles up to play like that over and over, then who wins in the end? The team.

oh and I'm calling it - if Austin has a drop or two against Atlanta or goes without a catch there will be at least one person rolling their eyes here or screaming for him to be cut or traded for Roscoe Parrish.
