Nate Allen

Why? For every Phillip Rivers, there is a Ty Detmer. Or for every Ed Reed there is a Michael Huff.

There has been talk of it on this board, and I read somewhere many teams have him listed as an OLB, not a safety.

Obviously theres going to be busts. Like I said, what else are you going to base it on? Measurables and Potential? If you look at the 1st round, or even the whole draft for that matter, 90% of the prospects have college production to back up there grades. The only exceptions I can think of in the 1st are Campbell, Mays, and Benn. College production is easily the most important aspect when determining a prospect worth.

And no, Mays has barely been productive, in terms of creating TO at least.

0 is no production.
Ok fine. :banghead:Then his production is substandard. Either way Allen is more productive than Mays.

Production and potential is what you should base it on. Mays was solid in the production area and his potential is through the roof.

Troy Polamalu's production was substandard too. He turned out alright.

Fine I'll admit Mays reminds me a bit of Roy Williams #31 so that, in addition to Allen's better production makes me want Allen over Mays. Plus we've had good luck with USF players.

Did USF really play teams like Wofford, Western Kentucky, Charleston Southern, Tennessee Martin, UCF, Elon, and Florida Atlantic? Hard to compare stats of a player vs teams like that with a player that plays USC's schedule.

They had the 59th ranked schedule in 2009, USC had the 19th.

Also, someone mentioned that Allen was a 3-year starter and Mays was a 4-year starter. So Allen gets credit for not being good enough to start his 1st year?

By the way, I like Allen. He's the 4th best safety available in this draft. I'd rank him slightly ahead of Burnett (sorry Rampage) and Chad Jones.

Nate Allen in '09 had 1 pick against winning teams, and 1 pick against ranked teams.

Mays had 1 against winning teams and 0 against ranked teams.

Courtesy of cfbstats.com's, split stats.

Allen gets credit for being more productive than Mays was over his college career, even if it was one season shorter. And even with one less year he had double Mays's INT total. Are we going to dock Suh for starting only 3 seasons? No.....

Now big school vs. small school shouldn't matter. TO came from Chattanooga or w/e and Ware as well as Osi came from Troy. I'm sure their schedules weren't as strong as USC but in the end that didn't play a difference. Florida's schedule probably hard but that don't make me think of Tebow very highly as an NFL prospect.

Could someone please explain this enigma to me? I haven't seen or read any reason why some people consider him a top talent. I am not real high on Mays, but he made just as many plays in his career as Allen against far superior talent. Even if Mays turns out to be just an underwear all-star, that is more than Allen is at this point. I know people are scared of drafting the next Roy Williams, but I would be more worried about drafting the next Michael Huff (Allen). Is it just the USF connection between Allen and Jenkins?

Huff was an absolute stud in college, a playmaker....Huff was far and away a superior college player than both Mays and Allen. Yes, his pro career has been somewhat lacking.....but he has steadily improved. I do feel he would be better if he were not a Raider though.

Yeah my newest man crush is on Nate Allen so I'm defending him as better than Mays.

Strength of competition does sort of matter since they are all taking a big jump in competition when they turn pro.

I think being stuck on the Raiders is an undeniable handicap and one of the most acceptable excuses.

100% agreed. I really wish we could make a Santonio Holmes like deal for Huff and get him for a mid-round pick. He's wasting away in Oakland.

Well apparently USF players are supposed to be horrible because someone named Mike Jenkins from USF didn't make the Pro Bowl last season.... Strength of competition doesn't matter as much IMO. Plenty of small school players have done well int he NFL, you don't have to be from a big football power. USC has had quite a few duds that were supposed to be studs,ie. most of their WRs and RBs and some of their QBs, big school doesn't necessarily help.

I do not feel he will ever be as good as he was at UT, but he has become a scrub in Oakland. I am sorry, but you dont just lose talent overnight.

I swear, when I saw that the Raiders drafted him, I wanted to puke. I was happy that he didnt end up in Washington (Orakpo), NY (Ross), or Philly.

Huff would do well in a better situation, it's a shame he got stuck in Oakland.

Oakland.....where football careers go to die.

Many of the latest Mock Drafts have Mays falling out of the first round, which potentially pushes Allen further back.

I guess I don't understand why INTs are the only stat that matters for safeties? I'm pretty confident that Mays is going to be a good player at the next level. I wouldn't mind him on the team.

I think me and Bob should start the official Cowboyzone Mays fan club. It just makes me laugh how whenever his name gets brought up the comparisions to Roy Williams start (also ignoring that RW was a pretty good safety at one point). It just seems to me that some have an irrational hatred for the guy.
