National Football Post : Cowboys "love" Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt

What are your thoughts on a trade up for PP?.

Do you get the sense that we would move on it if he's at 6?

I'll touch on this more when I make my pre draft prep post Sunday but right now I give it a better chance then I did last week although I still think it's a long shot unless 1 of 2 scenario's play out which change the odd's GREATLY.

Sorry, I planned on having a whole section on this in my post. You will have to wait. lol

i'm fed up of not developing our own OL(aside of Free). Its time, imho, that we get some real young talent in and let them develop. I think a DE in FA would be better served.

I have no problem at all with Smith at 9 but I'm not locked into him as much as some of the fans seem to be nor are the Cowboys.

smith, castonzo, carimi i dont care, just wanna see the fact that JJ realises the OL needs addressing, not sugar coating with turds like brewster

Is Watt a top 15 overall prospect in this draft? A trade down to somewhere between 16-18 to pick up an extra 2nd would be nice. Our draft could then go something like- 1st-Watt,2nd(a) Cannon/Carpenter,2nd(b) Harris/Dowling/House, 3rd-Moffitt. I would have no problems with his draft. I really dont buy that we're that high on Watt anyway. Ryan usually likes his defensive players more athletic and versatile. Watt is a straight up end without great pass rushing skills that lacks elite size. He reminds me a lot of a smaller Carriker from a few years ago. Probably will be a solid NFL player, but nothing more than that.

I don't agree with any of this, Watt's 6'6 290 and put on a show at the combine. He was a monster for Wisconsin who lined up all over the place and rivals only Nick Fairley with his film/production as far as DLine goes.

He's underrated on this board, he'd be a good pick at 9

I agree with you but i think so many people have been drinking the Tyron Smith kool-Aid that anyone but him will be a utter and complete failure on the cowboys part.

I could be wrong because I've honestly only seen Watt pkay a few snaps here and there, but I don't see him as anything more than a straight forward DE in the 3-4. I don't believe he can stand and rush the passer, drop back in coverage, or play inside well. He would fill a whole nicely on our line. I'm just not sure if he'd be a noticeable upgrade over Bowen if we had to start him.

I think that's a legitimate concern.

But I'm not sure when have we ever asked our DE to "drop back in coverage" consistently?

I think he does provide a bit more versatility than what you might think, at least when compared to a guy like Spears (whom I respect) or Ohlshansky (whom I like). Neither of those two players brings much of anything in the pass rush department. I think Watt is more gifted in that area.

Ryan is going to bring a whole different scheme than Wade ran. Much more "exotic" packages and blitzs.

And I completely agree with you that Watt is much more gifted than Spears and Igor. I'm just not so sure how much of his athletic ability will show when his main assignments will be eating blocks or stuffing the run. Like I said, I think Watt will make a fine player, I just don't see the value of any DE at #9 overall.

That's actually far from the truth.

Ask any scout worth a damn that has been around the game for a long time and they will tell you in the end, any good scout will go back to the start and evaluate their board before any of the draft process got started. Back when all you had when was game film to judge a guy. Often the best decisions are made when you stay with what got you where you were in the 1st place.

Could not agree with you more. After all is said and done, it is the tape that should determine how effective a player is on the field.

J.J. Watt only played two years in the Big Ten and was a transfer from mighty Central Michigan. Why does he get a pass on that? Watt is a projection to 34 DE, and will he be able to take on double teams in the NFL and win at the point of attack without getting driven off the ball. That was a "concern" brought up about him on NFL Network. He is not an explosive, athletic player. DE is one of the biggest bust positions in the NFL; it's in the top 3. This guy is not even close to being worth a top 10 pick. He has value in this draft in the late teens, and I wouldn't take him unless I was in the back-end of round 1.

Chris Canty came out of the fourth round. Taking Watt at 9 or any where in this draft would be idiotic for the Cowboys, and I don't think the Cowboys will do it.

If the Cowboys draft him at 9 or any where. I will ban myself.

You keep saying you will ban yourself if Dallas does X,Y, or Z..how are you so positive they won't? Just because it makes no sense to you or do you have inside info?

I dont even have the energy for it but that analysis of Watt is crock of crap.

The reason he was making his way up draft boards is because of the athletic ability he displayed at Wisconsin and at the Combine. All you have to do is take a look at the guys numbers to realize who have an athlete on your hands and explosive one at that. I find it funny he is athletic enough at the combine to be asked to do LB drills and display surprising ability doing it and jump up to the first half of round 1 and now he's a slouch.

Is he the greatest value at 9, that can be debated and I'm not 100% sold that he is but I'm not about to dog the guy because of it. He's going to be a hell of a player in this league.

I agree. I would be happy with him, only in a trade down. He reminds me of Jared Allen.

Watt is an upgrade at DE. Personally I like Bowen and Spears. Hatcher has been injured too often for me although he has enough ability to play a 3-4 DE. I wouldn't take Watt at number nine either. I'd take Quinn in a heartbeat or even Smith. Quinn will be a superstar. I'd take Watt in a trade down if it was into the late teens.

I am hoping the Cowboys to draft J.J. Watt just for this based off that silly post.

Of course he is. The question about him is whether or not he is a value with the ninth overall choice. That is all.

If we were sitting smack dab in the middle of the first round and he was being projected to the Cowboys, I would have no issue with him.

He might not be a world beater, but his intangibles could be exactly what the doctor ordered. I do not think his desire to play football and win can be questioned.

It seems like your concerns are contradictory. You think Ryan will utilize a much more exotic approach to bring pressure (I agree), but you then have concern that Watt will just be used to occupy block and stuff the run?

I like watt but I do not want him at 9. Only if we trade down several spots I would take him. I do not think he is worthy of a top 10 pick. JMO
