Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska have just as good of traditions as Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State have. In fact, Ohio State is just about all the Big 10 has now, because Michigan is down right now. Penn State has to be respected for sure. However, after those three teams, the Big 10 is hurting. Wisconsin is pretty good, but after them??? Iowa has it's moments.
Football is the driving force here. The Pac Ten is reacting to the Big Ten's power play grab. They have always kind of had a complex about the Big 10, even though they win most of the Rose Bowls. I'm talking football, but the Big 12 was right up there in basketball. I'm not talking about $. I'm talking about the quality of football in the Big 12.
The Big 10 makes more money than anyone, but money wasn't the only motive for expanding. While I'm sure they want the money, the SEC winning the last four national titles has helped motivate them more to expand. They saw Ohio State get destroyed twice by Florida and LSU. They need more fire power in that league to compete with the SEC right now in football. Nebraska gives them a proven brand.
The Pac Ten has only been around since 1978. USC and UCLA have carried the conference for the most part. Other teams make runs at winning, but if if wasn't for USC's latest dynasty, the Pac Ten would have been hurting. The Pac Ten isn't a bad conference. Cal, Oregon, Arizona State, Oregon State, Stanford... Those programs are good teams to play. Oregon will be making the trip into the South this year. Those teams are competitive, some more than others, given the year. Washington, Washington State, Arizona... You never know who is going to be good in the Pac Ten. The teams in the Pac Ten have been up and down. USC was the only consistent team. They were always good, but they have big trouble know.
The Big 12 was the second best conference in football for sure, better than the Pac 10 and better than the Big 10, at least that is the perception in SEC land.
