Cornering the market: If the Jets don't pick a cornerback in the first round, I wouldn't be surprised if they explore the possibility of acquiring a veteran, perhaps in a trade. There has been speculation about the Dallas Cowboys trying to deal the disappointing Morris Claiborne, the sixth overall pick in 2012, but they'd take a major cap hit. Right now, his cap charge is $4.4 million, but it would explode to $9.6 million if they trade him, counting the bonus acceleration. The Cowboys would have to receive an offer they can't refuse to absorb that kind of hit.

From ESPN NY writer Rich Cimini. Sounds like pure speculation to fill an article to me, but this is not the first time we have heard about Rex Ryan linked to Claiborne.

That cap hit alone makes it crazy to even think of.

As you said, the cap hit alone basically kills this rumor.

No thanks, unless we get at least a 2nd rounder, which is doubtful. I value him higher than any other team possibly can because I believe we haven't seen his best days, he has talent and with a better front-seven can absolutely be a quality starting CB. Plus, due to his sub-par pay we may be able to lock him up long-term for a decent price (see: Scandrick, 6 yrs, 28.2m, 10m guaranteed).

Some of Broaddus cryptic coments about Mo lateley dont sound like they are overly hopeful about him.

Claiborne's not going anywhere and besides the article is wrong. If Dallas cut him or traded him it would be a $5.7 million hit against the cap. Still way to much plus then we would be probably somewhat forced to take a CB in the first 3 rounds. Claiborne will be much better this year.

His cap hit is already 4.4M; therefore, the increase or "cap hit" for being traded is the difference which is about 1.2M (rounded).

This is a perfect opportunity for you to explain (if you would be so kind) how to read the numbers from Over the Cap. http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Cowboys&Year=2014

According to that site, Mo's cap right now is $4,435,773. If he is traded or released, that number would increase to $9,610,842. The difference is $5,175,069 not $1.2.

Thanks in advance.

You had me until the last sentence. Why would we hang on to him if he is playing poorly just for cheaps sake. I agree about his potential to the team and his value being nothing lower than a 2. OScan, even with his lack of ball awareness always showed cover ability and confidence of a vet. Young 'old man' type.

The 9.6 is only if he is released.

They have his 2014 and 2015 base salaries as guaranteed. Those hit the cap if released, but go to the new team if traded.

Google overthecap Cowboys
Select the Calculator option.
Next to Claiborne's name, select the trade option.
You should see a cap number of 5.1M.
If you undo the trade and select cut, you should see the 9.6M number.

Whole contract was guaranteed wasn't it?

Looks as though the original number would be correct with the entire contract guaranteed.
