She is not "in black face". Black face was an intentional overcharacterization of African Americans during the early part of the 20th century. What this young lady did, was use makeup to change the tone of her skin to better match the rapper she was trying to portray in her costume.

Black Face was done with malice and intent to demean.

Wearing a halloween costume imitating a rapper is not even an issue. If it is, then you need to examine why it is an issue for you.

The guy behind her in the pic has white makeup on to look more pale... I'm assuming vampire or something.

That's offensive too.

She's in black face. I'm shocked so many people are "yawning". Its not even about the Cowboys at this point. I find it more sad that its 2009 and we're still doing black face like its acceptable.
Maybe it's before my time and I don't get it, but what is so offensive?

Never mind. Just saw Rackat's post. The two have nothing to do with each other.

Reportedly she's 21 and I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't even know the history behind blackface in America. A lot of young people don't. In the picture below, she's with fellow DCCs, Mia Greenhouse and Jackie Bob. Both are African-American and neither of them seems offended. I think it's a generational thing. Older people who get angry, should ask themselves when is the last time they taught some young person the history of this country.

She's in black face. That's why its controversial. Some still look down on such in this country.

SO for Halloween, the new law should be, you can impersonate whoever you want unless they are a black person? C'mon, you can not really be serious about this garbage?

Her intentions weren't malicious I don't think but it doesn't matter. She went out of her way to make herself black. That's where the controversy is at. You just can't do that. Even in 2009. Its not about imitating to be a rapper. If it was Eminem she was portraying there would be no problem.

Let me tell you what people see when they look at her. They see every single black stereotype there is. From the diamond teeth, to the wife beater to the hat, to the tattoo's? Its just tasteless. And then to paint yourself black? That's where the controversy is. I'm not sayiing we should be in a uproar about it but I am a bit shocked by the nonchalant attitude people are giving this. But I can't say that i'm shocked. Some don't know the history.

"No, it's cool. I've totally got black friends!" :laugh2:

The whole thing is pretty silly. I'd like to say I don't understand the big deal, but I'm not even sure it's being made a big deal out of.

I'm 23 and I know the history but I understand why people may not. I never learned in school about black face. I even took African American history in college and we rarely discussed black face there as well. She probably has no idea about the black face era. Like I said, I don't think her actions were meant to offend but it definitely could be considered offensive by someone who does know the history.

True and some people should evolve past the history and look at today's relevance of an act.

She is not in makeup to be a black person. She is in makeup to be a specific person.

I think there is a big difference!

Its not really. This story came out on Saturday. Or Sunday morning. I forget when I heard about it. No one really cares.

I really don't consider what she did to be "blackface." When I think of blackface, I think of the black shoe polish look with the white lips that they depicted in mintrel shows. This young lady put on brown makeup to make herself look more like L'il Wayne. I believe she meant no harm, but I understand the slight uproar. Some do not distinguish between blackface and the brown makeup the cheerleader wore. I do.

IF the person you are trying to impersonate dresses that way then yes, I'm being serious. If you have a problem with the way they are being portrayed, I would suggest you tell THEM to stop portraying themeslves that way. Seems you don't have a problem with they way they look, just that someone would have the audacity to dress up like a famous person who looks that way.

That's just the height of idiocy.

What is the difference? You don't think when people were painting themselves black with shoe polish in the 1920's that they didn't have a specific person in mind when they were doing so?

Well by the nonchalant attitude that people are having on this issue I would say we've evolved passed history. Apparently its become acceptable to paint yourself black and it deserves a "yawn".

It looks like she is just portraying a rapper who is African American, but I can see how it can offend some people, even though without speaking with her and I dont think that was her intent, preception of black face can be very offending to some people.
