Kosier was one of the top two reasons why we sucked at short yardage right up there with Garrett calling pulling guards. He just is not strong at the point of attack and average DT push him back. Haynesworth made him his *****.

We replace Kosier in the starting lineup and we have instant depth because he can play both G positions and RT in a pinch.

I think that's a fine plan. We just now got to find the guy and see if he can beat our Kosier next year for a job. Given this club's tendencies, I doubt it unless we trade up for a 1sr round Guard which is pretty unlikely.

Some of you are just afraid of change...

2003

Adams - Allen - Lehr* - Gurode* - Young*

Gurode was a center the year before.

3 new starters on the offensive line.

2004

Adams - Allen - Johnson* - Gurode* - Vollers*

3 new starters

2005

Adams - Allen - Johnson/Gurode* - Rivera* - Vollers/Tucker*

2006
Adams - Kosier* - Gurode - Rivera - Colombo*

2007
Adams - Kosier - Gurode - Davis* - Colombo

We normally have at least 2 changes on the offensive line, and its never seemed to need more restructing than it does now.

Dallas needs to bring in some young offensive linemen out of this draft.

I'll tell you this, too.

They better be ready to play.

40% of the starters should be replaced, imo.

LT better be heating up in the bull pen.

Why bother to guarantee something that's completely outside of your control, and even completely outside the organization's control?

because it's fun :D

I could live with this group but I don't know if Iupati is ready to play next year and I doubt we draft high enough to pick him up. He will be top 15 by the time the Combine is through which is too far to trade up for.

Worst case Kosier opens as the starter but Iupati finishes (if we get to draft him)

Pre-season? You recall how he performed in pre-season? Many on this board saw that he was a better option than Kosier but the coaches rarely demote starters.

The correct word here would be potential but I doubt they give up on him anytime soon. He's got 3-4 years the way they hold on to players around here.

Jenkins, Scandrick and Felix Jones are playing if Holland was that good he too would be playing. he did nothing in the pre-season to take the job away from anyone. Thus far he has played in a part of a game and did alright outside of that please tell me what has he done to earn any job? I'm all for him coming to camp (hopefully in shape for a change) and earn the job. The BS about young players not getting the chance yes they do as mentioned above. By the way Holland has been in the league for 7 years so he is not that young

What's it going to be then, eh?

Keep Davis and Gurode. Have Flozell at LT for one more year. Release Colombo and start Free at RT. Keep Kosier as the backup swing guard and center. Draft Mike Iupati for the starting LG spot.
How about keep them all, draft high quality replacements for McQuistan and Proctor and build rationally for the future?

Just because we draft a lineman like say Iupati early does not mean you cut a decent starter in Kosier. Another year being a swing tackle will not be so damaging to Free that we would have to cut Colombo. I'd rather see an open competition at either tackle spot to give Free his opportunity at winning the job. If so, then worry about cutting good veterans.

You just accidentally typed that the OL has 'never seemed to need more restructuring than it does now.' In a thread where you also named the OL starters from 2003-2005.

I didn't say to cut Kosier; I said to keep him as the swing guard and center (I believe he played center in SF). I truly believe Colombo is done and will not be a starter this year. I just think it is Free's time, he showed he was very solid for us. If Free is on the bench in 2010, I'll lose all faith in the organization.

I noticed that also.:laugh2:

We need to bring in a lot of OL talent to compete and improve depth, but don't have to replace one starter for 2010.

I hope we do. It would be great if we did. But we don't have one glaring weak spot on the OL.

At the very least, I would like not to see Colombo on the field this year. We already have Free to take over his slot so we are okay there.

At the very least, I'd lack to have a replacement for Flo by next year as he is on his last legs and I'm not convinced he can play through another year. His quickness was already marginal and calf injuries are notorious for robbing players of quickness and explosion (we also don't have any idea of how bad that calf injury was). I think Free could take over this slot. I don't think we are drafting high enough this year to count on anyone being ready to play this year. We probably have to spend a first round pick to get a guy who we could develop into a LT by 2011 season. I think the solution is likely that they will slide Free over in 2011.

This brings us back to the RT position then in 2011 where I suspect the player is going to Brewster, 2010 draft pick or a vet FA. A great deal will depend on what Houck thinks he has in Brewster. Hopefully he is the guy as we could use some good luck at hitting on 3rd round OL given the number of busts we have experienced.

Kosier needs to be replaced by next year. This could be a place for a stopgap solution FA but preferably would be a draft pick from 2010.

Gurodge can probably play 3-4 more years so he is not an immediate concern.

Davis is also not an immediate concern.

However, if appropriate depth is available, we should pick some extra OL whenever there is value on the draft board in 2010 and 2011.

I'd love to see OL in 2010:

LT: Flozell Adams (one more year and then Free takes over)
LG: Whoever wins competition between Kyle Kosier and Mike Iupati
C: Andre Gurode
RG: Leonard Davis
RT: Doug Free

2011:

LT: Doug Free
LG: Mike Iupati
C: Andre Gurode
RG: Leonard Davis
RT: Robert Brewster or 2010/2011 draft pick

On paper, we definitely look better. Now the FO just needs to execute the appropriate deals to get it done. I don't know how likely Iupati is to drop within our range. I'm not a huge proponent of trading up in the first round for an unproven Guard from a small college but if he falls to us and is BPA then by all means.

Wow I wouldn't dare let Davis go, he's not the problem on the line. Kosier isn't strong enough for the LG position. I would draft a future LT and a LG!
