New proposed rules changes

Interference should still be a spot foul if it's egregious. If the guy just grabs the receiver because he's beat, then I'm fine with a long penalty.

It's the ticky tack pushing and shoving calls, or being slightly to early, that should be limited to 15 yards.

Exactly! I hate this penalty. No one tackles guys on purpose in college, high school, or middle school football for that matter. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen teams use this penalty to their advantage. Especially teams that throw it deep on a regular basis. It’s a game changer and it needs to be fixed.

The other rule should be illegal contact. Give them 5 yard but not an automatic first down. Just a dumb rule. That is another one that changes the game. How many times is that stupid penalty called on 3 and 15??

They bring that up but say it doesnt really happen in college.
Right . It hasn’t ruined the college game .

There was a time when I wouldn’t have been for this rule change but PI calls are so rampant now it might be time .

Totally agree.

The word "considers" rules that headline. Something has to be done with the "Catch Rule" for sure. It comes up 3-4 times/season in some game changing situations

15 yard limit on PI, if were a CB I'd just mug a WR that beats me past 15 yards

I disagree.

Generally, Most times a defensive back is in position to “mug” a receiver. It means they are also in a position to try and make a play on the ball. Because to “mug” a receiver you need to obviously be within arms reach. So why wouldn’t they attempt to make a play on the ball instead? I suppose DB’s who trailing will be inclined to dive at a receivers legs at the last second when otherwise they couldn’t touch them. But I don’t think scenarios like that happen that often in a game.

Also, 15 yards and an automatic first down is still a harsh penalty. DB’s can’t afford to give that up everytime a team throws the ball deep on them. Not if they want to be employed in the NFL for long.

The comment that they do not do that in college now is incorrect, I see that all the time. I think that would really be exploited in the NFL and have even more PI calls.

its the smart play if you're beat and out of position, I think the NFL defensive coordinators would be all over exploiting this rule

Happens a few time in college but the reason it doesn't happen because when you get beat you get beat. Now 15 yards and an automatic first down (when 3rd and long) changes things. That is the way it is being written, correct?

Maybe they say the first time it's flagrant by a player, just 15 yards. Second time, spot foul?
What is considered flagrant? Something being "malicious" or "intentional" is a judgement would like the refs really to make that judgement.

I agree with that. NO penalty should be an automatic first down for the offense. Is there a penalty that can make it automatic 4th down for the defense?

I also believe penalties should be assessed IN FULL. If you're on you're 12 yard line and commit a holding penalty, then back them up to the 2.

And if the offense is on it's own 2-yard line and moves early, give the defense the option of a loss of down instead of the 1-yard penalty.

I am with the 15-yard penalty change. I know DBs will kill WRs when they go beyond 15 yards, but I consider this
1- Who says the WR is going to catch it? or should I say "complete" the catch. Why give 1000000 yards for something that not 100%?
Some WRs forgot how to catch the ball ([cough]88[cough])

2- They already getting 15 yards out of it which enough for me. It's a free 15 yards on what could've happen

They're coached to push the envelope now with the rule and the risk of a lot of yards beats a TD. Change that to just 15 and we will see an increase in PI's and more stops within the game.

Just my opinion but the NFL's #1 priority should be getting this jerky stop/start part of the game under control because I watch less NFL each season and am planning on even less this season. The actual action isn't worth the time investment.

I'm all for making touchdowns meaningful again. Scoring should be special, not like holding serve.

Yeah, it would have to be a judgment call. Just a like a flagrant hit. Or hitting a defenseless player. Holding for that matter. They are all judgment calls.

It would have to be clearly near tackling a guy. Grabbing both his hands, grabbing his legs, wrapping him up. Basically anything that prevents the WR to have any chance of catching the ball. But if the DB makes a play on the ball and happens to grab an arm, you know, like what we see today. Just make that the 15 yard plus first down variety.

Yes, I like this idea. 10 yard penalty should be a 10 yard penalty. Stop this half distance stuff. And loss of down on the offense if they can not apply the full yardage.
