tough call. If you do you lose him right before TC especially when the reports are that he'll be back soon.

I know.....they have to decide before he does I guess. He may try and go for the Free Agency route.

That is a tougher sell after losing a finger.

At 100% I didn't think he was worth 14m, injured no way. NYGiants don't have much else though.

I completely disagree.

Football people, ie. Coaches, owners, coordinators etc would STILL love to have his talent.
The finger won't even be missed. Literally... Figuratively....

New York Giants franchise defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul reportedly had his right index finger amputated on Wednesday following a July 4 weekend fireworks accident, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
But even with the gruesome news of the lost finger, Pierre-Paul's career might not be in jeopardy. Not at all, per Schefter.
Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul finger amputated today. Medical source expects him to play this season, "sooner than people think."
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 8, 2015
The Giants can't know what to make of this news because they reportedly are hearing about this after Schefter reported it. The team sent long-time trainer Ronnie Barnes and special assistant (and former player) Jessie Armstead to visit Pierre-Paul in the hospital, but he refused to let them see him. Other reports say that the Giants offered medical help but were rebuffed with that, too.
How Schefter gained the information — even if it was leaked by the Pierre-Paul camp — and reported it is a matter of some debate right now as a possible HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) violation.
But as it relates to the player and the team, we're heading further into the unknown. Schefter's report suggest that Pierre-Paul's condition is not that bad, and we do actually have a history of football players continuing their careers without parts of their appendages.
The most famous is former San Francisco 49ers safety Ronnie Lott. Sickening, but true. Another is Arizona Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson, who might have lost the tip of his finger while running down a punt of all things. Another player, Houston Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus, lost the tip of his finger in a weightlifting accident.
Pierre-Paul was given the Giants' franchise tag and is due to make $14.8 million on a one-year tender, but he has yet to sign the offer. Could the Giants revoke the offer, thus making him a free agent? It's possible, as they already have taken a $60 million long-term offer off the negotiating table.
This story gets more bizarre by the day.

would you pull the tag......I would......just business

I think the reason they don't pull the tag is because they are willing to pay the $14M (or whatever is it) just to retain his rights. If he returns at 90%, the $14M is worth it just to retain his rights and resign him to a long term deal next season.

Clearly, it is now in JPP's interest to sign the tag as if the Giants pull the tag, he DEFINITELY won't make $14M (or a beneficial) long term deal this season after this incident.

Besides, if he plays this year at $14M (and plays up to his level of play) and then signs a long term deal (say a 5 year $60M deal (I believe that was his original offer)), he doesn't lose much of anything contract wise. That is right at $75M over six years.

I disagree with you here. I think the other 31 teams are very glad that they don't have to deal with this issue.

And if the tag is rescinded, there's no chance that he'll make anywhere near that amount this year. With a substantial injury like this one, there's a good chance that he'll never be the same player he once was. Offensive and defensive linemen hand-fight for a living on each and every play. Any injury that impairs that ability is significant.

Many teams feel like they dodged a bullet.

I thought the Bullitt was a Ford prodcut?

OK, but can you be more specific on what I should 'watch' for?

He will still get a fat deal.

Especially if he plays well this year.

This bad story will turn in to a feel good story.

I am not even challenging you... It's just we see this happen often

But NYG doesn't have to pay him 14.8m this year to negotiate a long term deal with him next year.

I don't think he comes back at least until Week 6 and when he does he will be severely diminished.

I would move on, not tie up 14.8m on the cap and look for a trade or a veteran cut after camp.

No worries, I'm not taking it as any sort of 'challenge', just a simple difference of opinion.

In my opinion, he'll never again be the player he once was and while he might remain in the league, he'll never again be a big-money defensive end and any thoughts of a $60 million deal ended with this accident.

This is going to hurt him big time. New Defensive scheme that JPP has to learn (he hasn't been in any of the Off Season stuff because of contract issues) and he is going to have to learn to play without the finger. He will never have the same kind of strength in that hand so it's very likely that he won't be the same player. He can still be very good but it's going to hurt him because he's a run and chase DE.

It's not that bad. They only had to cut his ******* finger off. I can see how the tip of your finger would not be a big deal because you still have the majority left. It's not that bad. Yeah, right.

Not sure how anyone can compare losing part of your pinkie to losing your entire index finger and the metacarpal attached to it. They are not remotely the same thing, and the comparison is borderline absurd.

Exactly. He's not going to be able to lift for a long time and probably never to the level he could before. If he even plays this year I don't see how he would be able to come close to matching his previous seasons. Tough break for the man. I feel for him.
