The New York Giants are withdrawing their $60 million long-term contract offer to Jason Pierre-Paulfollowing the star pass rusher's fireworks incident over the weekend, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday, per three sources informed of the situation.

JPP suffered a hand injury Saturday night while attempting to light fireworks. He required hospitalization, and will remain in a Miami-area hospital for the next few days. Rapoport reported that, as of Sunday night, doctors were still examining for nerve damage and other issues related to the incident.

Given the timing of the event and the apparent judgment displayed, the Giants do not believe a long-term offer is in the best interest of those involved at this point, per Rapoport.

Big Blue's decision is not expected to alter the current situation, however, since the defensive end was not planning on accepting the deal prior to the July 15 deadline for franchise tagged players to reach extensions.

It appears JPP, 26, is set to play 2015 on the $14.8 million franchise tag. Pierre-Paul has yet to sign the tender.

Tag still in place.

And this is why athletes don't sign the tag until the moment they have to.

I remember there were a few posters saying Dez was getting bad advice by not yet signing his tag.

What a moron. Dude must feel so stupid. Regardless of what happens, he'll have to live with the fact that his dumb decision making had a significant negative impact on his health and career.

And I'm no doctor, but if this incident caused him to be in the hospital for several days like this article reports- then it's a more significant injury than what some of the other previous reports eluded to.

The fact that he's in Jackson Memorial in Miami means its significant. A Palm Beach County guy wouldnt be all the way down at Jackson Memorial unless it was significant. Schefter said the Giants official in town still havent spoken with him yet or seen him. There is a cone of secrecy surrounding this whole thing is what Scheftie said.

The Giants still can rescind the tag if they wish because he hasn't signed it. Actually, this is an example of why they should sign it. Rescinding it at this point leaves him with no deal, no money, and no leverage.

He is lucky actually because as it stands they only rescinded a $60 million 5 year deal.

The heck are you talking about? A tag can also be rescinded.

Barring extraordinary situations teams aren't going to let a cornerstone player reach free agency this late.

This is THE example proving exactly that...

That doesn't make not signing the tag a good idea nor a safe one. Signing the tag doesn't mean a new contract can't happen.
It keeps you from doing on field activities where you're most likely to get hurt and extends the only leverage you have against a team. Paltry as it may be.

People saying he should sign the tag right away are literally saying they know better than agents with decades of experience.

Dez could tear his Acl tomorrow and the Cowboys wouldn't rescind the tag.

This makes no sense. If they rescind the tag he is hurt with no contract and no leverage.
You miss the part where he is an unrestricted free agent and the team wouldn't even gain compensatory picks if he signed elsewhere.

A guy blew his hand off and his team hasn't rescinded the tag and you guys are still saying guys should sign it right away in defiance of agents who have practiced for decades.

Tom Condon literally one of the best agents in all of sports.

Well maybe he should have signed the extension a little faster
Sad for the kid getting hurt but at least he will get big money this year and the best news is he probably won't be signing an extension with the Giants even if he is fine after this

I am crying so many tears for the Giants and their fans over this incident. Their franchise has been through too many hardships and have long been the victims of obvious bias & hate in the media and in the NFL offices. Why must this kind of thing always happen to them???

Can you tell that I hate the Giants?

Yes. But they didn't. And the guy literally blew his hand off.

Well he might have trouble signing

i feel your pain
I do feel bad for the player
Can't say I feel bad for the Giants though
One thing that says a lot about the Giants is they pulled the offer before they even went to see him
It's not like he was in any position to sign it right now
Kinda cold to pull the deal before they even took the time to go visit him in the hospital. Says a lot about how much they care about their players
Obviously they would pull the offer if it is going to hamper him long term but I suspect most teams would have waited till they at least visited their player in the hospital before pulling it
Obviously he couldn't sign it right now anyway
