I notice everyone who responded to the quote by Dungy addressed his prediction and not his criticism of Newman's technique. Who cares about his prediction?
Dungy, due to his work and development of the TB D, has a stellar resume as a defensive coach and his comments about Newman being "lazy" and giving the free release to the receiver are what's telling.
Somebody said the safety couldn't get over. Maybe if Newman had fulfilled his responsibility and correctly jammed the receiver as Dungy indicated was necessary for that type coverage the receiver wouldn't have been so far downfield and the safety could have successfully maintained his coverage responsibility?
Same thing with the play that preceded the "Campo incident." Newman dropped his responsibility, hence the conversion.
And his reaction to Campo tells me what I need to know about his attitude. "I blow the coverage but don't say jack to me."
More often than not, he is simply out of position. Whether that's due to laziness, as Dungy alluded to, or the injuries slowing him down, all I know is when it's third and long, teams go at him. Successfully.
