Is it ok to admit that Trufant is the better CB? While I love having Newman, I do sometimes wish we would have taken Trufant instead. That guy just makes plays on the ball! A little better in coverage, IMO. Would this be considered blasphemy on my part?

Blasphemy? No.

Wrong? Yes.

Newman has been MUCH better than Trufant over their careers. Not just better, much better. Newman has been one of the league's top shutdown corners, while Trufant is regularly among the most-targeted and most-beaten corners.

Trufant had a nice season this year with the interceptions and all, but he's still nowhere close to the cover corner Newman is and gets picked on a lot more than Newman ever has. Not to mention that even with his seven interceptions this season, Trufant (the guy who "just makes plays on the ball") is only tied with Newman for career interceptions despite having many more opportunities.

The only advantage Trufant has over Newman is that he's younger. But Newman is better, and pretty much has been every season -- often by quite a bit.

I liked Trufant coming out of college, it's all apples and oranges. This is his first pro bowl just like it's Newman's so I really don't see the argument really.

Again, don't waste your time buddy... People only see one game and get all crazy.

I've seen Newman continuously shut down the biggest receivers in the game along with not allowing Touchdowns for to long to not understand his value.

Its Newman all day and im not so sure he isn't the best player on our team.

Exactly...Trufant plays more Zone, anyways....he's not you Man 2 Man type corner....i see him in a lot of Deep Zone...

Newman on the other hand is better at Man...and can play Zone well also....Newman will completely take a top receiver out of the game, While Trufant will give the Top Receiver a few catches, Maybe 1 or 2 Td's and then snag a pick or 2

Newman, Newman's Receiver will have stats like these

Newman- 4 Tackles, 2 Pd, 1 int.

Receiver-4 catches, 40 yds, 0 td's

Trufant-6 tackles, 4 pd, 2 int's

Receiver- 9 Cacthes, 102 yards, 2 td's

IMO, that is :)....but Guarantee..its close too the truth...now which would you rather have?

What I noticed mostly today, was how every time Collins overthrew a receiver and Treufant was in the area, Collinsworth would go on about how great he is...

Had Collins thrown the ball properly, Treufant would have simply had a tackle added to his stats.

Your thoughts.

I think they are both equal in talent IMO.. I would be happy with either.

I tend to believe John "10 Win Garantee" Kitna over AdamJT13.

I hope you're being facetious.

Kitna can think whatever he wants (never mind that he probably was just promoting the hometown guy), but Trufant hasn't performed anywhere close to Newman's level over their careers. Kitna might think Mike Furrey is better than Wes Welker, that Roy Williams is better than Terrell Owens, that Kevin Jones is better than LaDainian Tomlinson, or whatever else he conceives, but the facts about their performance say otherwise. (And it's not my information that would tell you Newman has been much better, nor would I expect anyone to trust what I say without corroborating information. All you have to do is look at the stats kept by STATS LLC, K.C. Joyner and Football Outsiders over the past few years. It's not even close.)

Yes, I was joking. I apologize if I offended. Kitna guaranteed 10 wins for the lions this year, as well as openly declared Newman "is no trufant" after our week 16 loss last year. I believe that is why the poster is making this comparison.

Apparently, AdamJT13 is indeed a robot, devoid of any sense of humor.

Just kidding, fella, in case you couldn't tell.

Until T-New starts catching passes he's defending, he can expect comparisons like this.

Close, but I'll take our guy. His best games are played at Deion like levels. Take away his 05' campaign, and he's an elite player in the league.

Newman's 2005 season was when he didn't allow a touchdown pass all season and shut almost everyone down in every game.

No, I think Trufant is better then Newman, he's much more Physical and has a lot better hands, however, Newman is still a top 10 CB, it's just that he has Hands of Stone.

Their career stats going into this season, according to STATS LLC --

Code:
[b]
Targeted	Comp.	Pct.	Yards	TD	INT	PD[/b]
[B]Newman[/B] 373	170	45.6	2148	12	12	64
[B]Trufant[/B] 428	248	57.9	3119	24	9	65

I expect the gap to widen even further after this season's numbers are added. According to Football Outsiders, Newman was one of the best in the league in yards allowed per pass (again), while Trufant was among the league's most-targeted cornerbacks (again).

And if Trufant has "better hands" than Newman, why did Trufant manage only one interception in each of the past two seasons, and why does Newman have the same number of career interceptions despite being targeted much less often?

whoa...thanx for the stats adam.

looks like our boy newman statistically is better than trufant. and i do believe he is better anyway. and just to add a lil spice to this, if he wore number 21, i'd have visionz of Deion all over...

Wow, I was wrong!, I had no idea that Newman was that good and that Trufant is overated. However, Newman still had hands of stone maybe if he caught a few more Balls he would receive more credit.

This comment would seem a lot more wise if you had said it BEFORE he had caught a few more balls and received more credit, as in, his first Pro Bowl.
